A few words from a 'newbie'

Hi to everyone
I stumbled across this group while researching e- book publishing for my own
book(s).
Already topics and threads I have read as a guest have been very useful.
A brief history of myself is below:

Male 51 yrs old
grew up in Derby England
Joined the UK Police Force in Lincolnshire in 1978 and was invalided out after receiving serious injuries in a night club disturbance.

I live with my 2nd Wife Tracey and teenage son in East Anglia.
Due to my injuries I have a lot of time on my hands and decided to start writing several years ago when i got my first computer.

I suffer from poor concentration so my writing is a little more sporadic than some.

Being really fed up with some of the dross that passes as crime thrillers, I decided to write my own based on my own personal knowledge and experiences.

My first book is 'finished' but is being edited and reviewed by myself for errors and continuity. Several other books are at various stages and have the common theme of the same officer running through them as an identifiable 'hero'.

After following the usual route of trying to get an agent, I realised that as a new Author, it is very difficult to get anywhere. It seems that unless you are famous in the UK as some sort of celeb then you have little chance of being accepted. At that stage I decided to look in to e book publishing through Amazon and have decided that is the way forward.

Well good luck if you got this far and

Steve Eyre

Hi Steve,

Welcome to Mobileread. Self-publishing through Amazon is certainly possible, but the big difficulty is in marketing and publicity. If you're serious about wanting lots of people to read (& buy) your book, you'll need to do a lot of this.

I'd certainly recommend getting someone else (professionally or not) to read through it to catch obviously error and typos - it's almost impossible for the author to do a good job of this.

Best of luck. Don't forget to mention it in the "Shameless Promotion" thread when it's available.

Wonderful Steve and welcome. I was going to suggest crime fiction for your writing, but jeeze you're way ahead of me.

Welcome. I've done a bit of writing myself and am working to re-ignite it ... hopefully.

Enjoy!

Good to have your company, Steve (Derby and Lincoln are two of my old stomping grounds). Sorry to hear of your problem on the job. But at least you have the background and experience to base your writing work on.

Be careful, though, Steve. Self-publishing is easy. Some feel too easy. Effective self-publishing of flawless work is anything but.

My advice, if you want to take that route, would be to take your time and learn from the good and bad experiences of others. Their stories, problems and solutions can be found all over the net and make for powerful preparation before you take the plunge.

Good luck and very best wishes. Neil
