Author's Aliases

Is there a way to manage different names of an author? For example: searching for an alias shows all author's books. Managing author's aliases would also lower the chance of duplications when adding books.

I can see at least two ways: Either you add the aliases to the authors' column or you define a new author type custom column (available since 0.7.51, IIRC) and use that to track the real authors' name. The second way would not necessarily help detecting duplicates, though.

There is no built-in support for this.

I suspect a number of people have come with "tricks" to do this, but I have not succeeded. When I know about an alias I can add it to the Comments field which means that book can be found using either name, but what that does not support is adding an alias at the author level and having that automatically and transparently applied to all books by that author.

I just add both the author's real name and the alias (and, occasionally, other known aliases if an alias is better known than the real name; Reagan O'Neal, for example, is better known as Robert Jordon but his real name is James Oliver Rigney, Jr.) in the author column. I generally know what aliases an author has used but if I discover one at a later date (or, usually, I discover an author's name is an alias), it takes only a minute to find and update any other instances in my library. If I feel further clarification is needed (which is rarely), I can add it to the Comments and it will show up in the book details pane when I select the book. It's not a big enough deal for me to agonize over.

Thank you for your advices. Still, auto management is always better than manual work. Is it ok if I add it to the (very long) wishlist?

You can add it to whatever wishlist you'd like. However, if you're talking about opening a ticket for it in the bug tracker, you'd best describe in some detail how you'd like the feature to work. Also, be prepared for the chance that the developers might ignore it completely because it might not hold any interest for them.

I suspect they'll also see it as something that is already available now. You can use the alias name as a second author name, or you can set up a custom column for the alias name. Chaley recently added some custom support for "names" associated with a book, such as illustrator, editor, etc., and I suspect this type of name can be supported that way as well. I'm not sure what additional automation is possible.

I see. I haven't actually had a look at that, I only saw that it was on Launchpad now and was happy, because I already have an account due to the translation work I did some time ago

I create a "tag" using the authors real name. E.G. Jayne Ann Krentz - all of her books in calibre have a tag - JAK - no matter what pseudonyms they are written under. Then when I add new books by her I add that tag to the new book. This works well. Especially for someone like her with several pseudonyms. Takes care of the duplicate problem because I can see if there are duplicates when I search by that tag name. Hope this is helpful.

The tag idea is probably as close as I will get

Does anyone know where to find a good, simple Pseudonym to Author name List?
