Can I force Calibre to store converted epubs another place?

This is driving me nuts. Calibre insists on storing all the stuff I convert in a Author/Book structure which I don't need. According to the help file it's because this is soooooo much more efficient than any other way of doing it... Yeah, right! I convert 4-5 documents every day to read proof on my Adam. And that means that I'll have to search 4-5 directories first instead of simply having them converted to the place I pick them up with the Adam. Is there a way of forcing this program to do this? I would like to get rid of the files except for the epub as well if possible.

If not, is there another good way of converting RTF-files into epubs?

In a word... no

There is supposed to be a plugin for OpenOffice that you can save documents to epub so you can try that...

Hardcoded, in other words. No clever registry hack or anything. Almost reminds me of the way Apple do things... I'll search for that OO plugin, that would be nice. I already use OO for some stuff. Thanks!

What you can do is after you convert things, use the "connect to folder" option. You can decide yourself where you want to put your files then (including filename and folder structure).

I use Calibre's "Save to Disk" function to copy my converted files to a single folder in a fixed location. I can then copy from that folder to my device when desired without having to relaunch Calibre to do the transfer.

I see that's possible too, but it seems to bring along the OPF file. The first way of doing it does not.

Not if you tell calibre you don't want it in preferences...

You're right, of course. That way I don't have the library files there either. Thanks! Is there any way of getting the "Save to disk" button do "Save only Epub" on regular click instead of a list box? I couldn't find that in the settings.

I'm a little unclear on why you need to move the files around outside of calibre. Kind of the whole point of calibre is to function as an interface to books, as independent of files. If you want to put them somewhere special, use "save to disk" to park them anywhere you want. Calibre being what it is, you might also want to use tags for "not started", "in progress", and "finished" so you can organize your workflow.

If you'd posted this in the calibre forum, you would have seen the sticky about file organization; read my .sig for an old version. Calibre has reasons for keeping its private files private, but there are ways of accessing them (exporting them being the biggest) that do not require disturbing calibre's internals. Several have been suggested in this thread.

As far as changing the function of buttons, you're probably going to need to do some coding for that; it doesn't impress me as the sort of thing any of the regular coders need more than they need the things they're already working on, so if someone picks it up at all, it'll go way in the back of the queue.

I use Calibre for conversion only. Every day I convert 4-5 documents for proof reading, and then I put them in a directory on the house server, where I pick them up with the Adam. I really don't need any kind of managing or tagging, only a good conversion and to get the files to the correct directory. And that it gives me. I never hook my Adam up to the computer in any way, everything's done over wifi. With the Save to disk I don't have to open ekstra windows and do that copy manually.

As for the Calibre forum I have gotten all the answers I needed in this thread, and it only took me a few hours. So no need to register for another forum (I must be on hundreds of them...).

Could you explain this more. I, too, prefer not having everything divided in "author" subfolders. For instance I drag an epub into Calibre. It goes into Author Subfolder. I convert to mobi, the results also go into that Author subfolder. Another book, another subfolder by title under author. I guess I really don't want all of those folders.

Thanks

If I need to get at a particular file, I just locate it in Calibre and then click the "open folder" (or whatever it's called) button and copy/paste to wherever I want to put it (usually my desktop). That's just what I've found is easiest for me.

Crossposting...

FF2, Go to Settings, Send books to reader (or whatever it's in English, I have it in Norwegian), and change the save pattern. It's probably {author_sort}/{title} - {authors} now. I changed it to only {title}

Queentess, I convert and move the files in one operation, and then they are never used again. So the Save to disk job did it for me.
