350 in place of 650?
Hi all!
I think I'm going to actually get an ereader today. I'm going to go shopping at Best Buy and probably B&N too. So, the 650 are still out of stock and I'm pouting like a little kid because I was so looking forward to my new toy and now it is not available. ![]() How are 350 owners liking them? Are there any posters who own both? How do they compare in terms of screen size? Does it make any difference? Can you tell that I really like Sony? ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I had both, but I only kept the 350. For me the difference was the price ($129 on sale vs. $229), the sharpness of the screen, and the size. The large screen on the 650 is really nice if you want that sort of thing, but it's a tad less sharp due to having the same resolution as the smaller 350.
I bought the 650 on Sony's USA web site by being persistent. Keep checking back often and you'll eventually get one. |

I don't have a 650 but do like my 350. I have a Nook & a Kindle but really like reading with my Sony350. The size difference does not bother me in the least.

I have a PRS-505 (6 inch screen) and a PRS-350. The drop in screen size hasn't been a problem in the least, in fact, I feel like I enjoy the 5 inch screen better than a 6 inch screen. I love the added portability, and I find it much more comfortable to hold the 5 inch reader as opposed to the 6 inch reader.

The 350 is a very nice reader indeed. I'd have no hesitation about recommending it.

I definitely recommend the 350 as well. It is a good solid reader and the most portable one as far as eInk goes. It is small enough that even with a cover on it still fits in most of my dress shirt front pockets. The only downside I can think of is it only comes in silver and pink.

I, too, am very happy with the 350. The medium font and a slight contrast adjustment make reading perfect for these 71 year old eyes.

Another one that's very happy with the 350, especially because of the size of it.
I got mine while they were on sale for $129 in the US, thinking that I'd really hate the 5" screen and end up returning it for the pricier 650. Instead I fell in love with the size. It's so small it fits into just about any pocket on my jackets and because of that I end up taking it everywhere with me. I honestly rarely leave the house without it in case I get a chance to sit and read somewhere for a few minutes. It's even made waiting in that gawdawful post office line a pleasure instead of the usual torture. |

I have had a 350 for a while, & bought a 650 at a Borders closing this weekend (at a big discount.) I preferred my 350 to my non-Sony EBRs, but I prefer my 650 to the 350.
That is to say, if I have both my 350 and my 650 to hand, I'll read on the 650. The larger screen is nice, and I can't tell if there's any difference in the font resolution. Both are easy to hold, or read while in a case that props up on the tabletop. But the larger screen on the 650 means fewer page turns, and given that I read phrases and sentences, rather than words, the large screen "fits" better. But here's the thing - the 350 is actually portable in a practical sense, while the 650 is not. The 350 fits in my jacket pocket or even my pants pocket, and just disappears. I'm always conscious of having the 650 with me, unless I'm carring some kind of bag to put it in. So if I'm going out somewhere, it's my 350 that is most likely to go with me. Bottom line is that I don't think you'll be unhappy with the 350, until you get a 650. And then, you'll have both, and be very happy. |

I guess it comes down to two thing:
Do you want a reader that fits into the tiniest of pockets? And Which font size do you use for reading? With the 350 being so sharpe I read comfy the XS font. This means I have actually more words on a screen than with my 6inch reader. ![]() |

Just ordered my 650 from Sony style two minutes ago! Yeah! First time I have found them in stock there since November. I always seem to miss them when they have been in.

Also, do you want to load books to main memory or a separate memory card? No card slot on the 350.
I think my 50-year-old eyes have just about given up on smaller fonts, so I'm not sure the 350 would be my favorite any more, even with a card slot. But I like carrying LOTS of books on a card, so it's not my first choice either way. |

I have half-poor vision and I thought I needed a 6" screen as well, but found that the 350 is so clear that I can actually use the small font surprisingly often if the light is good enough.
I wouldn't mind having a 650 for home use, but the 350 is really fine both for "home" reading and pretty much unbeatable when it comes to portability! Last edited by Asawi; 03-24-2011 at 07:35 AM. |
