How did it do it? The biggest reduction in thickness came in the iPad 2's battery subsystem, wrote Kevin Keller, a teardown analyst at IHS iSuppli, in a research note today. This part of the iPad 2 is 2.5 millimeters thick, a 59 percent reduction from the 6.1 millimeters of the original iPad, according to Keller.
"The iPad 2 battery design represents a major shift from the iPad 1," Keller said. "Apple moved from two thicker cells to three thinner ones, flattening out the entire battery structure. The new design also allowed Apple to eliminate an injection-molded plastic support frame from the battery subsystem, further cutting down its thickness."

Reduced the battery thickness 59%, increased the speed, and maintained the 10 hour battery life.

They also eliminated the metal clips and fasteners and replaced them with glue.

and the glass screen is thinner too. Still waiting for mine to ship but did receive the Smart Cover. The weight loss of the iPad2? just got heavier. The Smart Cover has 31, yes, 31 magnets in it and I weighed it, 4.7 oz. LOL

kinda funny that we all of a sudden are down to the minutiae of ounces being a "difference" maker. I mean, really?

About the glass, did they switch to a stronger glass something like Gorilla glass to make up for the thinner glass? For me if they would move to Gorilla or similar glass/ceramic top layer it would make a really attractive design even with the lack of ports for use on the go...I stopped using dongles over a decade ago.

hahaha, yeah. FYI, I did some reading last night on the conditions in Japan and in between my shudders I read that Apple is indeed using a special glass on the iPad 2. The factory though was located near the reactor region and it was mentioned this could through a wrench in iPad 2 production from a direction most of use take for granted. it's "just glass" after all, right? T

The article implied this glass was a lot stronger than normal glass or even glass. It got me wondering about what each reader maker uses in the area of glass. It made me ponder if that might be where the cheaper readers cut their corners. I am going to pay a lot more attention to that component now thanks to the article I found. Oh, and no I can't remember it but will spend a moment now to see if I can find it in my history but I think I set the browser I use in my VirtualPC to wipe everything when I shut it down. Sigh, too much security for really no reason at all on my end. hahaha...

"But the second generation [iPad] uses a very, very flexible material that behaves quite differently. It's almost like plastic," said Lam. "We had a very tough time getting it to shatter, and finally had to do an edge cut to make it break."

Lam said that the new material resembles the aluminosilicate glass used on both the front and back of the iPhone 4. Last summer, several analysts connected Apple's use of the aluminosilicate material to Corning's "Gorilla Glass."

The iPad 2 uses something similar, but because Apple didn't call out "aluminosilicate" in any description of the tablet -- as it did with the iPhone 4 -- Lam believes it's not sourced from Corning. One possibility: Asahi Glass Co.'s "Dragontrail Glass" technology.

"Dragintrail is very similar to Gorilla Glass," said Lam.
