Cannot update firmware or charge battery

I just got this yesterday. The battery is showing as low. My computer does not see the reader -- actually sees it as a mass storage device and has done so several times. Deleting these wrong devices merely causes Windows to put them back.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I understand that I need to update the firmware for this. Cannot update because cannot charge battery.

Can access menu but cannot scroll down the menu. Then it turns itself off. Turning it back on gets a yellow flashing light, but then it will shortly turn itself back off.

Well, nuts! Now I have a red light regardless of whether I turn the power button on or off. Can no longer access starting up page or menu.

The red light on the top of the reader indicates charging. Allow it to fully charge until the light goes out and then see if it turns on.

It can not be used while charging.

Fooled around with resetting it. Soft reset, then hard reset. Plugged it back in. It has now updated the firmware -- so it says -- and Windows is no longer putting a new mass storage device into my device manager every time I turn the reader on.

Now have a steady red light when plugged in. Does this mean it is now charging the battery?

Basically - Red Light = Charging... it has absolutely nothing to do with the on/off switch, it shows that the reader is charging!! When plugged into PC the SSD of the reader mounts as a mass storage device... it is supposed to... every time you delete/eject/dismount then you DISCONNECT the ereader from your computer. Check other threads relating to 505 and Vista 64 for more info and details of possible problems...

Red light was just kidding me -- not charging at all with USB cable. Finally went to Wally World and got a PSP wall charger. That did recharge the battery.

Showing the reader as a mass storage device is understandable -- but showing six of them and adding another every time I plugged it in? The firmware update that finally went through appears to have cured that. It only shows one Sony mass storage device now.

All appears to be well.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it very much.
