Losing .jpg covers when adding .LIT books

When adding books using the option 'read metadata from file contents' I get .jpg images for the covers in the folder along with the .opf and .lit files

When I try to add books with this option unchecked (so that the filename populates the metadata), I no longer get the .jpg cover files in the folder.

Is the cover image considered 'metadata', and if so, how do I retain this image when I import the .LIT file?

I also can not download any of the covers... I've tried that. I get the following error even though the title and author are correct:

'Could not find cover for this book. Try specifying the ISBN first'.

Thanks,

Jeg.

cover.jpg in the book title folder is for Calibre cover browser (and future converts).
The 'tick' say where to try a obtain that cover on import
IF you have a different (way older) cover, like I do, that you wish to use, you remove the tick.
The fact that you mention this, means you are poking around beneath Calibre's skirts. Heed all the warnings you see here in MR

I'm not poking anywhere. I'm just trying to add books to my calibre library without losing the covers that are located within the .LIT file already.

Can you give an example of how to keep the covers when I import them? I'm not sure what you mean by 'tick'.

So far the only way I can think to do it is to import every book twice, once to grab the metadata from the file, and another time to build the correct author, title, etc. using the regex commands. Then I have to merge the two duplicates in calibre. Very annoying to do it this way.

then where are you seeing a problem?

Calibre Never removes something from the original on import.
The image in the LIT file is still there.
If you tick the option to :
Read the Metadata from contents, and there is a Cover available. It will ALSO be shown in the Library view.
If you "Convert" a book, The conversion options will control wether Calibre ADDS the cover from the Library (view). Calibre will not remove an existing Cover image that Calibre did not ADD (the usual is create a "titlepage.xhtml" in your book).

To read the cover when you imported the book reading metadata from filename, you'll have to look in the edit metadata dialog. To the top left of the formats pane, there's a button that allows you to set the metadata cover as the one in the currently selected format.

Correct. It's opening up the book and reading metadata, which includes title, author, book cover, etc.

Again - correct. With this option it doesn't open the book, so there's nowhere to get the cover.

The cover image is metadata, but is not always treated the same as other metadata. Regardless, there's no cover in the filename, so when you get metadata from the filename, you get no cover. You have to get it separately.

There are two ways to grab the image from the book after you add the book.

Select the book, open the Edit metadata window and click the Brown book icon under the available formats area.

Select multiple books, open the Edit metadata window, under change cover check Set from ebook file, click OK or apply.

If there is a cover within the book it will be placed appropriately in your Calibre library.
