Retrieving custom column after reinstall?
ok, sorry if this has been covered; 1st post and I've searched the forums and haven't seen an answer.
i recently had to do clean reinstall of OS, and subsequently calibre. i was able to successfully import my collection w/metadata, however the custom column i had created is missing. i "assume" the info i entered in the column is in the metadata still. i have over 1200 books in there, so it's definitely not something i would want to redo. is there a way to retrieve the original structure with custom columns on a reinstall? the only thing i can think of is that maybe i had to 'save to disk' at some point and that might save the structure somewhere? please advise. thanks. |

thanks for your quick response.
yes, i've seen that before (i looked there before posting). that's actually how i restored my database in the first place. however, there is no database integrity check button on my calibre (latest version). only 'debug device detection' and 'open calibre configuration directory'. i'm not sure if that is the missing ingredient that i need to fix this, but it's not there where you show it in the FAQs. |

You probably just need to unhide the column. Right click on the column headers to unhide hidden columns.

theducks: yep, saw that too. ran both 'check library' and 'restore database'. nothing.
kovidgoyal: tried that as well. there is no unhide hidden column selection. there IS if i choose to hide a column first. even if i go to 'add your own columns'. the column that i created prior isn't showing again. so i go back to my original theory: would i have had to save the 'layout', if you will, at some point, with my custom column? |

custom column information is stored in the database. If you correctly migrated the database as outlined in the link I posted before, the custom columns *will* still be there.

ahhh. got it to work finally. i believe, since my calibre library was on a d: drive (in case i needed to do a clean reinstall, which i did) that after i made the switch i moved a copy of that library to an additional drive for redundancy, and then restored the database off of the copy. not sure why that wouldn't have worked, since it kept everything else. but once i added the original library back in the column was restored.
