Kindle screensaver offmode ^:)
Hello!
I've done this to my kindle 3: ;debugOn (enter) ~disableScreensaver (enter) ;debugOff (enter) This is really good, because some of the screensaver pictures are just freaking me out. Anyone could tell if I can damage my kindle with this? (It doesn't seem to go to sleep mode like this) How is it for the battery? Thanks in advance! Gab |

It probably does affect battery life but if you are not page-turning or using the device it probably is not using much power.
And for those who may read this, to restore things: So, to enable it again, enter: ~resumeScreensaver You can end with ;debugOff |

I also found that restarting the device restores the original screensavers. |

I don't see why using this method should damage your Kindle although you should be careful using debug mode of course.
I know I have read several issues of people complaining how quickly the battery drains using this technique which proves just how efficient that screensaver mode is. If this becomes a problem, just turn off when you're done with each reading session. |

So why would you be afraid? I'd worry more about politicians and lawyers than men in drag. Now if you have a politician or lawyer in drag, you've got something to be afraid of...

From the technology aspect of the thing - since e-ink uses energy only to change the display, how could turning screen savers off affect how much energy it uses?

Say what you will ...... after seeing the regular Kindle screensavers, looking in the mirror is no longer depressing.

what would be neat is if it used the cover for the book you were currently reading. maybe one day...

![]() Even when it's "asleep" it's not the same "sleep" as a computer (that would be equivalent to the Kindle's "off" state"). In Kindle's version of sleep, it continues other background tasks that can be highly draining, like indexing and wireless communications and downloads (if wireless was left on when it was put to sleep). E-ink display's use of battery only when it redraws is relevant only as a comparison to LCD, which uses a significant amount of energy just to maintain an image on a screen. |

Not quite. There's some question about how often it pings, but it will continue to check in and download subscriptions.
ETA: Page 24 of the manual: "If your Kindle had wireless on prior to going to sleep, it will continue to receive your regularly scheduled subscriptions while in sleep." Last edited by Piper_; 03-05-2011 at 08:50 PM. |
