This happened to me and I fixed it by shutting the nook all the way down and restarting it. I just wish the Nook Color had a Daily section.

I version 1.5 and wifi and each friday I get the free book offer

your wifi must be connected.

I love mine and got one for the wife for Valentine day

I had this same issue with wi-fi connected. It just stopped updating the daily for some weird reason, but a complete shutdown and power on fixed it for me.

Airplane mode ON is the same as WiFi OFF. Why they labeled it that way, I have no idea, but that's all it is.

Airplane mode (all wireless signals off) is named that way because that's how your supposed to set your devices during flight to prevent interference with the plane's equipment.
