Kindle: the last chapter for books?
Kindle: the last chapter for books?
The Guardian - 26 February 2011 "Man Booker prize judge Chris Mullin has turned down the use of a Kindle – but former Orange prize judge Daisy Goodwin thinks he's a bit of a luddite ..." Last edited by boxcorner; 03-01-2011 at 03:09 AM. |

There's flaws in both their reasoning's of course. It's interesting to think about book judges being influenced by book covers and author pictures though.
That said, I have been thinking about the Man booker prize today. I liked that White Tiger book which won the thing a few years ago, did you read that? That was a funny book with an interesting protagonist. I heard they were making a movie about it. lol. I'm hoping someone will upload the man booker long list when they release it, I could probably buy a few maybe if you can too?? |

I believe my wife read that, so it might be amongst a stack of p-books that she's given me to read. Not sure. She reads far more novels than I do. I mostly read non-fiction, but have begun to read a lot more fiction since I got my reader.
I mostly get my p-books from PostScript Books - they sell publishers' overstocks and remainder books - so only if they eventually become available from them, otherwise all the e-books that I've read to date have been free-of-charge. I'm a bit of a cheapskate. Last edited by boxcorner; 03-01-2011 at 04:16 AM. |

From the Man Booker site...
The 2011 longlist, ‘The Booker Dozen' - the 12 (or 13) titles under serious consideration for the prize - will be announced in late July. The shortlist of six books will be announced in early September. The winner of the 2011 Man Booker Prize will be announced on the BBC from London's Guildhall at an awards ceremony on Tuesday 18th October 2011. ...so it's not as long as I thought! amjb |

I find it pretty depressing that everyone involved in this Grauniad article (including a 'professional' journalist who supposedly has an interest in print media) knows so little about the issues involved with ereading and epublishing. Remember the 'famous' Kindle 1984 case which 'proves' that a cyber-attack could wipe all my books from my Sony ereader and my iPad, even when the wireless connection is turned off!
You find far more informed and entertaining views in practically any thread on this board. A slap on the back for user-created content, an epic face-palm for the fustian (and frankly moribund) old-media. |

There are always lots of skirmishes and kerfuffles when an industry gets off the ground. There's no particular reason why anyone who is just getting into ebooks needs to know the difference between the Rocketbook and the Cybook. Nor should every article about ebooks be oriented towards the tiny percentage of early adopters -- especially in the UK, where ebooks are just starting to get off the ground. |
