Mobile Etique is worse...
(Reuters) - Whether is it texting during dinner, talking on a cellphone in a public restroom or using a laptop while driving, most people think mobile etiquette is getting worse, not better.
Ninety one percent of U.S. adults questioned in a new poll by computer innovation company Intel said they have seen people misuse technology, and three quarters think mobile manners have decreased in the past year.... http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/...71O05020110225 |

I think if anything its worse here in Asia, I have seen groups or families having dinner and they are all sending texts or playing games on their mobiles. Then you get those people who figure it's better to yell into their phone than to talk in a normal voice. I stopped going to the cinema because I can't stand people talking on the phone during the picture, beyond rude!

@mortis: awww. here in the philippines we give them the evil eye, and they're usually ashamed enough to shut up or quickly hang up. in japan though, people seemed pretty well-mannered, at least in my experience. it's frowned upon to use the cellphone while in the train.

I often wonder how people took their dogs for a walk, baby out in a pram/pushchair/went shopping - in the days before mobile phones - a good many people lead their lives with a phone clamped to one ear.
One young woman paying for her shopping was simultaneously packing bags/playing coo-coo with baby in trolley/paying with chip&pin all while holding a conversation on her iphone which was firmly clamped between her ear and shoulder (it would not have taken much for the phone to have fallen to the floor - then I wonder what her priorities would have been ![]() |

Civilization is becoming a fast-paced, quick-fix, selfish place. It's less about spending time with others and more about information accumulation. We will be robots via download to the brain

At the Pizza joint I cook at, we are constantly getting people coming in the door talking on their phones, trying to read menu and making their orders without ever taking the phone from their ear. We had one counter girl who would just walk away until they put their phone away. Worked *sometimes*.

I recently started paying attention to other tables when we go out to eat -- now that my youngest is 2 years old and demands slightly less of my attention -- and I am amazed at the number of kids that are playing with their Nintendo DS Lite/DSi/DSi XL game consoles! I suddenly realize why my 7 year old keeps asking to take his in, even though I have never let him play with it at the table.
I think my husband would like to use his smartphone at the table -- and sometimes does, at home, when four of the five of us are done eating -- but he keeps it put away because he knows it annoys me. Sometimes, if it is just the two of us, we'll both have our phones out in a restaurant, but we're always doing something together, not separately. (Looking up movie reviews or times or calling up our email for an event schedule to share, for example.) We turn our phones off when we're at a movie. I have never had a conversation with someone that I couldn't stop with a quick, "I'm in line and it's my turn at the register. I'll call you back in a few minutes." So, I guess I really don't understand why people feel like they have to be and stay on the phone and it does annoy me. I can't imagine what it is like to be a cashier and have to deal with it constantly! It boggles my mind that people think it is okay to multitask electronic devices when dealing with people that are right in front of them! |

I can't for the life of me think of an email that would be so important that I couldn't leave it untill after whatever I am doing. I know if my wife started checking her email at the dinner table I would be very annoyed, I never do it. I guess I am old fashioned, I still refuse to answer the phone when I am eating, taking a shower, reading late in the evening, on the loo or while making passionate love to my wife, I personally can't think of anything that can't wait the few minutes it takes to finish.
I will always call people rather than SMS/TEXT I think texts are ruining the world, I'm not joking. Just today I saw a policewoman on a motorbike sending a text message that ran into the car in front of her, luckily for her we were driving slow and she got away with nothing more than wounded pride and embarrassment. You see people here riding motorcycles on the highway sending text messages, that might not be so bad, but the driver in the cars are doing it too. I guess thats not really rude as the OP intended, but it is stupid. Last edited by Mortis; 02-28-2011 at 10:22 AM. Reason: Grammar is suck :) |

Kenny, your link starts off at your gallery then quickly flips to something that says the mature filter is on. If I click that link, I get to a login registration page.
If I delete the trailing stuff, I can see your gallery (and that's worth the trip, for sure), but I don't see anything that seems to relate to the post you're quoting... Unless it is 'The Ritual' - which seems to be filtered... Help? |
