Hi from Tongala, Australia

I'm a newbie to e-books, bought a Sony PRS-500 from e-bay and am having big problems transferring a purchased book, whereas I have been able to transfer free books to it.
I now can't get Calibre to recognise it.
I wonder if the PRS-500 was only sold in USA and therefore is not recognised elsewhere?

Hi affa44 and welcome to MobileRead. I have a 505 which apparently was a good improvement on the 500. Anyway, try posting your question in the Sony section

Hi affa

The 500 is quite an old model so it may not recognise the newer formats, specifically epub. Also the book may have DRM, which may require additional software to download it. If your file is an acsm file, then you can open it with Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) and then transfer to your reader.

Can you tell us a bit more about your problem, ie book format, where you purchased it, how you have been trying to transfer it?

I purchased the unit from e-bay and have just found out today that it was never sold by Sony Australia and therefore is not supported locally. I purchased the EPUB book from the local Borders on-line store and couldn't drag it across on either the sony library or adobe digital editions. I did contact Borders and although the rep was very helpful couldn't fix the problem. I contacted calibre and received a very curt reply that calibre no longer supports un-upgraded prs-500s. Unfortunately the only upgrading available on the sony website is for the library and I have downloaded that.
Have I been sold a pup? (sorry that may be an Aussie expression = a lemon)
