Software recommendation

My wife video taped our son in class last week and our DVD player can play those home movies but they need to be in MP4 format in order for that to be done. The movies are in Windows Media Player format, I need software to translate from WMP to MP4. Freeware is preferred, however I have no qualms paying for the software, recommendations are appreciated.

MP4 is just a "container" format - it can contain any video and audio codec. You need to find out what specific video/audio codecs your player supports, and then look for conversion software that supports those. Eg, a common combination for an MP4 file is H264 video and AAC audio.

Ah, I had a feeling that there is something there that I do not understand. How would I accomplish this?

ConvertXtoDVD is an excellent program that should have no problem with the video (but converting it to DVD, as the name implies, not MP4.)
