will a cybook gen3 work with window 7?
My XP laptop has died and to add to the problem my desktop is a vista 64 bit and my Cybook Gen3 freezes if I plug it in to this. The laptop would help get the Cyook to work again.
So when I replace my laptop it will probably be windows 7 will the Gen3 work with this? Also while looking at some laptops the last few days the ones I would buy are 64 bit windows, I know from the desktop this courses a few problems one of them the Cybook, I do regret getting it now, if I had known the things it has problems with I would have got a 32bit one. Is the problem with Vista or the fact that it is a 64 bit version a factor? Or is it better to get a 32 bit version? Another solution would be if I could install Digital Editions on a SD card ? Because at the moment I have to take the DRM off which I don't mind but if I could get Digital Editions on a card it would be easier. Thank you Becky |

You can install 32bit application on a Windows 64, kind of just works. Don't hesitate to pick 32 bit version, even if you have a 64 bit OS.
Have you contacted bookeen about the vista issue ? The gen 3 is just a mass storage device, should work with any OS. (just as a side note, 32 bits OS will be able to use only 3G of ram, so if the PC you plan to buy have more ram than that, go 64bit.) |

Thought I would chime in, I use my Gen 3 on Os 7 64 bit all the time.

I have just bought a new computer and it won't "see" the Cybook. The USB cable is OK and the device shows connected but it doesn't show on the computer. I have Window 7 64 bit on my desktop and &7 32 bit on my laptop. Same problem with both. Have contacted Bookeen but they simply gave me details of new firmware which is no good as I can't connect the Cybook to download it!!! Glad to see someone with 7 can work it. Any answers?

You don't need to connect the CyBook to install new firmware. Download the firmware from Bookeen's site, copy the firmware file to the root of the SD card (using a PC card reader), then reboot the CyBook, following the instructions supplied with the firmware update.

Make sure the plug at the Cybook side is fully inserted. I've seen the exact same behaviour you report with both things. |

Thanks Harryt and Jellby. I have now installed the firmware upgrade. I have tried plugging into each usb port on my desktop, my laptop and my old computer. None of them work. Although the Cybook shows the cable and "connected" there is no response from the computers.!!! I've also been v. careful with the plug as not all plugs will work - shoulder casing of the other plugs too thick so I can't use another cable to see if the one I'm using is faulty - although I have successfully recharged with it. Any more ideas?

Are you sure about your USB cable ? I had one that worked for charging (the cybook said "connected"). But where data transfer was broken and the cybook not detected by windows.

My father made a custom cable by cutting the edges with a cuter. Last edited by EowynCarter; 02-25-2011 at 02:31 PM. |

What length of USB cable are you using, I very often find I can only connect to my PC (Win 7 64bit) with a short cable - it doesn't (for me) seem to like the 'normal' length ones ....

Thanks for the comments about the usb cable. I didnt think that the data part could be bust. Is it possible to find a cable with the thinner shoulder. I don't fancy trying to cut one down - woud probably cut my finger down instead!!

You don't have another mini USB cable? They are used by all sorts of things: cameras, external USB disks, mobile phones, etc.

I've just checked, again. If I use a normal long USB cable, the Gen3 itself says it is connected, but the PC doesn't 'see' it. - That's how you describe your problem. Moving back to the mini-cable (I'm sure this came with the Gen3?) the PC now recognises the device - it may not be auto-playing this morning, but the device - connect symbol is showing in my Task Bar and checked via Windows-E. |

Thanks everyone. It was the cable which was faulty. All my other cables are too thick Harry, but a very kind assistant in PC World found me one of theirs which fitted and gave me it! Problem solved.
