little trick:really saturated view
Just discovered a little trick to have a very saturated view
In Options->adjust view, you have 'original' and 'saturated', but imho 'saturated' doesn't change anything. To have something really saturated, but less defined, select the little box near 'custom' and set the 1st setting to 100 and the 2nd setting to -100 (or 90/-90, 110/-110, 120/-120, etc) Now the text is blacker and really more saturated, but less defined. ![]() Edit: sorry, I just saw there is another thread on the subject. Forget that. Edit2: After playing a little, I think 70/-70 or 75/-75 is the maximum to keep a good quality with the sony original fonts. Beyond that, the quality is really going down quickly (Originally, I've tried with Georgia fonts, and with Georgia fonts 90/-90 or 100/-100 is still okay with the S size) Last edited by Bidibulle; 02-17-2011 at 04:39 PM. |

I don't know where this other thread is, but you just made my reading experience about a hundred times better. I'm trying to decide between Kindle and the 350 (have both at home) and I always thought the text on the 350 was not very good in comparison. You have just made my decision easier. Thank you!

The other thread is here
Hum, think twice before choosing the prs-350 This little trick was just a experiment, I don't want someone to buy a device just because of my message... ![]() And by doing that, the quality of the font is really lower. (I just do that because I don't know how to install a semi-bold font on my device) Last edited by Bidibulle; 02-17-2011 at 04:40 PM. |

Thanks. If you really want to make the text clearer, use a custom BOLD font. I read bold all the time. It's twice as clear.

This thread isn't the only thing I'm considering. Believe me, there are lots of other factors too. But, the lighter fonts of the 350 were holding me back vs. the nice dark fonts on the Kindle. This really helps a lot. And I think I settled, for now, on a 60/-60 split, which doesn't make the font look too bad.
I have the 350 russified right now and will probably also try the bold font idea. |

That's very close to my preferred setting that gives me the darkest text. I use 127 and -125 for the 1st and 2nd settings and it's even a bit more saturated.

And where do you get Kindle fonts from? I've heard about Caecilia, but it's not free and by all accounts isn't the same as the one used by Amazon.
I'm currently using Droid, but I'm not set on it. |

cwappy, I've been using Lexia DaMa as an alternative to the Kindle fonts. I also like Charis SIL.

I heard about Lexia DaMa earlier today on another thread, so I downloaded it. Haven't put it on my reader yet. I also need to try out Fontin and Palatino, both of which were mentioned on here.

There's a lot of good fonts out there. The key is to use bold. Other than a light, I think it's single biggest improvement to clarity. You don't need to russify or change the firmware to use new fonts.

Can you use those fonts without flashing?

Yes, you can change fonts just by adding some info when you convert a book with Calibre. You can find the simplest directions on how to do it here.
The fonts I like the best so far after trying several are Verdana (which most computers already have installed so easier to get) and LexiaDaMa. |

This is what I do. I also am using the Verdana font, I really like it.
