What's Your Prediction - $99 Digial Reader

I had an email from Borders this morning that the Kobo Reader's new permanent price (not a sale) is now $99 at Borders. It's the new one with the WiFi, not the old model.

Will the others (nook, Kindle) drop down to match?

Maybe not, since Borders is in such financial trouble?

Hmmm, I didn't realize borders was in trouble... Gonna use your link to make some backups now... :P

EDIT: Guess I should have at least tried to be on topic. Personally, I think the kobo should have been priced at that to start. It is missing a lot of the frills other readers have like multiple bookmarks, note taking, music playing, etc.

$99 is what it should've been priced at to begin with. It doesn't have the specs to warrant Kindle pricing.

Personally I could care less if Borders is having finacial troubble and I don't think that other forum member should either. Discounting and under cutting competitors prices is the kind of self distructive behavior that I want to encourage these companies to engage in. I will look at the Kobo again and see if its worth the time and troubble to add a second electronic reader. I was hoping to get a color or a touch screen down to my kneck of the woods.

Question for forum members - If Borders shuts down its stores nationwide becuase of financial troubbles does that mean that they will need to shut down their web based business? Or are the two independendent of each other?

I really don't know, but I wouldn't risk it. Would probably be best to download and de-drm any ebooks purchased from Borders just to make sure you'll still have access to your purchases. I should note that so far they're only talking Chapter 11, which means you probably wouldn't see a difference as a customer. But let's just say that I used all my Border's gift cards earlier this week, just in case.

I still have unused $50 gift card... Do you know if Borders accept it on their website or in offline stores only?

2 months ago Borders makes a statement that they plan to "buy" Barnes and Noble....now their going bankrupt....AND dropping the price on the Kobo....i wonder what else they plan to do before they drive themselves completely into the ground.

The Kobo is lacking in features that the Nook and Kindle have, like book marking. This makes me think that the Kobo will stay the basic e-reader for folks with the Kindle and Nook staying where they are price wise.

I am going to guess that more people know of the Kobo then JetBook and hardly anyone I know outside of this board knows about the Kobo.

I'd venture a guess that if Borders were to file for bankruptcy the online digital book business would remain and a large number of their bricks and mortar stores would shut down. eBooks are profitable.

But yeah, I'd get your online library there liberated and backed-up, but I say that about any retailer - not just Borders.

I've used Border gift cards to buy eBooks before. The selection isn't as large as Amazon/Barnes and their prices can be high but around Christmas they ran an awesome $5 booksale. Maybe you'll find something good.

It's a solid value if you're looking for a monochrome LCD device, but not everyone wants that.

EInk still has both battery life advantages and higher resolution than the Jetbook.
