Success vs. bricking at installing hacks?
Hey guys,
I'm seriously considering installing a screensaver hack for my K2. The one thing that's been holding me back even from the beginning is the thought of bricking my Kindle while installing any sort of hack. Have you/do you know anyone who has bricked their Kindle from installing hacks? What's the success rate? I do really want to set the screensaver to only display the Kindle-tree images, but I'm terrified of something bad happening in the process. |

I personally haven't heard of anyone bricking their Kindle by installing the screensaver hack. I suppose there is a risk, but I really don't think that it's any bigger than installing a official update. I mean how many people haven't tried it as of yet with no problems? And besides Kindles ain't like people and medicine. They're born pretty much the same.
![]() There could arise other problems by installing a hack than a total breakdown, eg. losing the warranty. But it seems Amazon don't mind with the screensaver hack anyway. I'll say go for it. You sometimes just have to dance with the devil, right? Cheers ! Last edited by Kenneth_irl; 02-17-2011 at 01:25 AM. |

I was a worrier too, but finally broke down and installed the SS hack. It was as easy as pie and worked flawlessly. I've since uninstalled the hack while I wait for the update to 3.1. I can't wait until our resident programmers come up with a new hack that can be installed/uninstalled under 3.1.

The ScreenSavers hack is pretty painless and safe.
You could potentially run into some problems with the fonts hack (non-permanent problems)... and you could definitely brick your Kindle AFTER you install the USBNetwork hack -- if you don't know what you're doing -- but ScreenSavers?? Nothing to be too terribly afeared of there. ![]() |

Just got another kindle delivered today for the missus. Was kinda surprised to see that on 3.02 though. Put the SS hack on that too without issue. -a |

As Amazon appear to be pushing out 3.1 for automatic upgrade anyway, I expect new Kindles to start appearing with 3.1 installed from the factory soon. |

Works great. =) ![]() Is there a thread around in here where people post Kindle screensaver images? There should be. Last edited by chyron8472; 02-18-2011 at 12:00 AM. |

The most common cause for bricking is pressing U on the recovery menu. (Sort of your fault for clicking it without reading what it does..)
The second most common cause is running a bad command on USBNetwork. This could pretty much do anything. As the others have said, Screensavers and Jailbreak are relatively harmless. Even Amazon acknowledges that people load custom screensavers (but avoid mentioning custom fonts, etc). P.S. Just realized I was late to the party. Oh well :/ Congratulatons. |
