Bookigee, a new exploration tool for book lovers
This new application ( http://www.bookigee.com) looks interesting. Here's what Shelf Awareness said about it:
"Designed to address a challenge discussed at both Digital Book World and the Tools of Change conference--discoverability--Bookigee is designed to help consumers match their interests with better book choices online. While many search engines propagate the continuing appearance (and sales) of bestsellers, Bookigee's algorithm is based on advice from an editorial team, allowing for backlist gems as well as new publications to populate what McLean calls "blossoms" of related books. These constellations of titles might be linked by author, genre or even editor. McLean and her team plan to test a beta version of Bookigee, designed for a touch interface, by fall 2011. She's working with experts from both inside and outside of publishing, including innovators in specialty design and retail, Silicon Valley tech engineering, editorial, bookselling and book marketing." We need something like this. Amazon's book recommendations are fairly good but could certainly use some help (I get the strangest results some times on my Rec. page, including things I would probably never read, even given four lifetimes.)
Browsing for books online at Fictionwise or eBooks.com is really painful compared to skimming a physical shelf of books and I hope people keep trying interesting ideas to put a little pressure on the pain. |

Sounds cool. But I won't hold my breath waiting for them to develop it.
I really dislike websites that look like they're for a fully-functioning product, then the site goes nowhere. If you hadn't specified in your post that it plans to be running in fall of 2011, I would have had no idea why I couldn't get the site to work. |
