Bothered by glare
Hi guys,
I am slightly bothered by glare from my Kindle's screen to some degree. Now I've had my Kindle for about a little over a month now, and at first it didn't bother me terribly, but lately it's starting getting on my nerves a bit. Now Amazon clearly states: "Kindle's screen reflects light like ordinary paper..." Well, this seems like a half-lie, half-truth. In my experience the Kindle is mostly glare-free, but there is glare zone about 15 degrees wide from a direct source of light. Now this is normally easy to prevent by changing the angle of impact by the light if there is only one light source; like the sun during the day. BUT if there are multiple sources of lights, like in my living room at night, it can be really difficult avoiding 'some' glare. I'm not going to return my Kindle or anything, but I just feel a bit cheated having read about it supposedly being glare-free. I'm I the only one bothered by this? You must have some fairly decent lighting - a nice change.
There is a very slight gloss aspect to the K3 screen but it's vastly superior (as you would know) to things like ipads etc. Unfortunately to produce a strictly non-glare screen would likely result in a reduction of resolution or cause the screen to be considerably more difficult to keep dirt out of. Paul. |

Change the angle of the light source a bit - that may be all it takes. I sit quite close to a 150-watt lightbulb, and have no glare problems on my Kindle. Of course, I have a K1, but from what I've seen, the screens appear very similar, glare-wise.

Not a real issue here. A little twist, turn, and all is well. I'd say anything with a screen is going to have so kind of a glare.

Well, like I said is not really a deal-breaker for me. I'm mostly statisfied with my Kindle.
So I take it that there is also a slight glare on the Sony 650 ? Still I think that it's wrong when companies colours the the real facts. But I guess that is just in the nature of how companies operate. Hell, it's probably the most common human trait. And it's not like I didn't know that when I brought it. |

I've had a Boxwave NON_glare screen protector on for so long I don't recall what the naked screen is like. But even that way, if I turn the k3 just in the right or maybe wrong direction, I can see glare, too.

perhaps when they say 'glare' they actually mean 'reflection'. used that way, it is pretty much 'glare' free compared to something like the ipad.
it does have the glare for sure. it's probably about as glare-free as it's gonna get though (for now). I kinda forgot about the glare myself, but now that you mention it I do remember noticing it quite a bit when i first got a kindle. perhaps in time you'll begin not to notice it too... I think the sony 650 has the touchscreen, yes? In that case, there is more glare on it because of the touchscreen layer that is applied. sounds pretty annoying. a big, BIG sacrifice for a touchscreen i would say. |

Well, I read that it utilizes infrared senses to function like a touchscreen instead of using a pressure layer on top. I'm pretty sure that a normal pressure layer causes glare, though.

I imagine that for glare to be completely removed would require a matte finish on the screen, and that would suck.

Concur on the glare - does annoy me occasionaly especially when on a bus and you cannot move lighting source. Not a deal breaker by any means but wish they could implement a totally glare free version.

Glare is the most bothersome when reading on a table because on a table, everyone likes to read hands free. I solved this problem by getting a DuraGadget Kindle 3 Cover. Since it has adjustable stand, I can put it at just the right angle.

My understanding is that the new Sony's screens look and operate the exact same as the Kindle. Meaning that there will be a slight glare on the screen when you catch the light in the wrong way.
The 600 and 900 apparently had really bad lare problems due to the touchscreen that was used. |

I concur. I like the overall Kindle reading experience but there definitely can be a huge glare - even making the reading impossible - under certain angles. Even worse, these problematic angles are exactly those angles under which the screen would be lit (close to) evenly. Some clever guys explained to me that it is impossible to get a bright, evenly lit screen without a glare. Whatever is the case, Amazon should certainly not advertise 'no glare' or book like reading experience as that is simply not true. This was probably the biggest disappointment after I received my Kindle, fortunately, it was overweighted by many pluses of the device

The 350, 650 & 950 do not have touch layers. They use IR to sense the touch. There is no layer on the screen. So the glare/reflection is no worse then the K3.
