Screen Protector?

Do y'all think a screen protector would work with the new sonys, or would it interfere with the infrared? I have one for a 300 and the size is the same as the 350... but I'm worried about applying it (and removing it afterwards!).

Any advice or thoughts?

I've tried using my 650's touch screen through a ziplock bag and was not able to get touches/gestures to register. Whether or not the screen protector will work would depend on how far above the screen the infrared grid is and how thick the screen protector is.

I've been wondering about a thin plastic wrap product like Saran Wrap. I don't yet have mine, so I can't test that idea.

FWIW, the screen looks pretty scratch-resistant.

I've never had a screen protector on my 505 and on the 650, I don't feel I need one. The screen really is good at not showing fingerprints.

FWIW, I put a protector on my new 350. It's from Best Skins Ever. I've used their skins on a few blackberry phones--perfectly clear and protective, lasted over 2 years and peeled off without a trace on my old Pearl. (I had a couple of sheets of their material handy, and just cut a rectangle to fit the screen.)

Doesn't affect readability or glare at all (compared it to my old 300 and contrast is still slightly better). The touch detection is also unaffected. The feel is slightly rubbery instead of hard glass, but the stylus and my finger work fine. No smudges/prints evident either. It may not be necessary, but I still don't have a cover/pouch for mine. Pretty lame that Sony charges big bucks for a basic fold-over cover (yeah, I got one for my 300) and don't even provide a pouch with purchase.

has anyone tried a ZAGG Invisible Shield? IMO, the 350's screen needs more impact protection. I started prototyping a slide/snap-on cover, like those click on sleeves for CASIO scientific calculators. Will post some pictures when I make more progress with the design. Let me know if you are interested in such a thing.

Why does the 350 need more protection then any of the other screens?

I use a Lexerd screen protector on my 950, it doesn't affect anything at all. You can't tell it's there; I can use everything on it in reference to touch screen with no problems

But WHY?

The new PRS-350/650/950 screens are anti-glare, and are made out of an incredibly hard mineral glass.

That and the fact that the IR touch screen requires ZERO pressure, means that if you don't use your diamond engagement ring, or a sand blaster to change pages, then scratches shouldn't be a problem.

These thin film protectors give NO added impact resistance, and can actually give a a foolish false sense of security, leading ultimately to a CRACKED SCREEN

Worthless as far as I can tell. Worse than worthless, in fact, because you can destroy your screen by applying too much pressure trying to work out all those pesky bubbles when installing the thing.

These so-called 'screen protectors' may have some value on other devices, but on the PRS-350/650/950 readers, they are just flat out A BAD IDEA.

I use my nails to "turn" the pages, and after repeated use I worry I will scratch the screen. It's ok if you don't think they have good use, I just like to use them. I wouldn't say they're a bad idea tho, it's not like they do any harm to the screen. They don't add glare, and if you put them on right then the risk of cracking your screen is very, very slim. They're not meant for impact resistance, they're meant for keeping the screen nice.

Let's just leave it at: you think they're useless, I don't.

For what it's worth, I did manage to scratch the screen on my PRS950. Got some sand stuck on the cover when reading on the beach.

On the other side, I have never found a screen protector that did not create air bubbles or otherwise impede reading. So I don't use them.

But yes, you can scratch that screen.

I use the little cloth they give you and wrap it around the bottom of my credit card. I start to peel off the screen and line it up on the bottom. As I peel of the backing I put my card on the bottom and run it up as I go to get the air bubble out. It took me a couple tries till I figured it out. I wish I can post pics cuz mine looks awesome.
