Where have all the editors gone? G&M article

An interesting article from Saturday's (Toronto) Globe & Mail:

It's a Canadian point of view, but it echoes what we have heard here, and it has some pointers for potential free-lance editors.

The article ignores a critical factor, namely that more people are submitting manuscripts than ever. In addition to cutting down some of the publisher's costs, unsigned authors routinely get their manuscript edited to improve their chances of getting a contract (let alone getting an agent).

By the way, perhaps it's just me but it seems downright routine to lay off staff during a recession. Is publishing supposed to be immune to a broad-based recession?
