Kindle DX distinction / 3G global connection

I've bought a kindle DX White and I've notice that's there is 3 but not 2 versions of the DX.

The white 1st gen has SN begins with B004
The white 2nd gen (inter'l version) has SN begins with B005
The latest graphite

My question is can I use 3G on my 1st gen Kindle DX in France/Europe? because I move back and forth all the time, and I think this is a big question for Kindle users who travel a lot too.
I can't find any clear answer for this, on Amazon they say 3G network has worldwide coverage, but for all or global version only?

No, you can't. The original Kindle DX has a CDMA radio and will only work in the United States. The later model has a GSM radio which will work world-wide.

Just to help clarify for the OP. Am I correct in that both the so-called 2nd Gen DX and the DXG are GSM? So from that perspective either is fine just that with the DXG one gets a couple perks like the Pearl Eink screen rather than the previous Vizplex model?
