Tower of the Medusa - Lin Carter $2.99 (US) [SciFi] (Amazon)

Quote:
Product Description
In the distant future, when science has evolved into an art indistinguishable from magic, Kirin the thief finds himself forced down on an alien planet. Gathering allies, he must defeat the Witch Queen -- who plans nothing less than the conquest of the entire galaxy! A thrilling sword-and-planet adventure in the grand tradition of Leigh Brackett and C.L. Moore.

His stuff has really, really been out of print.

He mostly sort of did pastiches of other authors. His Lovecraft stuff is dreadful (what I've read of it), but supposedly some of his sword & sorcery stuff is pretty good.

Wildside Press has been reprinting some and there are a couple of others higher priced at Amazon and one at Fictionwise, but this one just came out.

I read the sample of this one and it actually looks pretty good.

Series he wrote that I enjoyed include;

Thongor
Callisto
The Green Star
Zanthodon

His Conan stuff is not bad either.

Light reading which in the main was not bad at all.

I have an almost complete collection in a climate-controlled storage in the U.S., including one of his X-rated fantasy novels. (I think it was published by Zebra.)

Most of his work is horrible, but in a horribly interesting way. In my opinion, he was a much more talented editor than he was a writer. However, that being said, I really enjoyed his Thongor novels when I was a young teenage brat back in the mid-'60s, when I hungered for more Conan.

"Tower of Medusa" was originally a Belmont Double, by the way.
