Paul of Dune - Herbert/Anderson

Paul of Dune - fits in between the original "Dune" and "Children of Dune" books. Brian Herbert is Frank Herbert's son and he has written a bunch of books in the Duniverse with co-author Kevin J. Anderson. I listened to this book via the Audible.com version with narrator Scott Brick. Scott Brick is one of my favorite narrators on audible and he does a terrific job with this book as always.

You can see the current 16 books in the series in chronological order here: http://www.amazon.com/Dune-Saga-Chro.../1COADLEGRZEOC

Dune is one of the great sci-fi books of all time. Paul of Dune is a worthy addition to the Dune legacy, though obviously, no one is Frank Herbert but Frank Herbert.

This book delved more into Paul's motivations and his feelings about being "Maud Dib", the messiah of a religion, and the murderous Jihad that he used but could not control. Personally, I find the "it's bad now but it's for the benefit of the future" a real hard pill to swallow. I do not think the book ever resolves how the future turned out to be so good because of the tremendous horrors of the Jihad.

If you like the Dune series, this is a must read. If you haven't read the series, start with the first book: Dune.

Frank Herbert left extensive notes about the Dune universe. This included a full history leading up to Dune and things that happened in between. Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have used these notes for all the Dune books they have written, so a little bit of Frank Herbert is in each and every one of the books. I'll check out Paul of Dune, I've read almost all the others.

I started reading the original Frank Herbert books in order and made it most of the way (75%?) through Chapterhouse before I gave up. Never made it to the Brian Herbert books, though my brother says they are fantastic. I really want to read Butlerian Jihad, but I'm just not sure if I want to invest time rereading the books I've already read, or if I should just read this one and screw any sort of sequence.

The prequel booms that cover the Butlerian Jihad can be enjoyed without rereading the Dune series. I enjoyed them all.

Unfortunately, the notes (if they exist) seem to be inaccurate and incomplete and in many ways contradict what was already published, resulting in books which are an awful mangling of continuity, and which do not fit in with what was already published.

I didn't perceive any glaring errors. Nothing that impeded enjoying the book. All the "big ideas" are in the original books. These "extra" books are more like comfort food. Going back to a setting and characters that you've enjoyed so much in the past.

I've started reading this, but I find it extremely boring so far (I've reached the fall of Kaitan). A lot of 'telling' instead of 'showing'. The only reason I'm still reading is because of my love of the Dune universe & I'm hoping it gets better.
