Cover with light NOT made of leather
Hello,
after reading eBooks with a Nokia N800, Apple iPod touch and lately with Motorola Milestone, I'm finally buying a Amazon Kindle 3 w/ 3G. I intend to read downloaded epub books (after converting with Calibre of course) and manga converted with Mangle. The free 3G is also very nice, that's why I'm picking Kindle instead of a eBook reader that supports ePub directly. Anyways, I want to buy a cover, and the Kindle has this very nice attachment system with lights that power up from it's own batteries. However, what is a nice touch for most people is a very negative point for me: since I'm a vegetarian, I don't support leather based products, and I can't find a cover with lights that's is not made of leather! So, my question is: Is there a cover w/ lights (powered by the Kindle battery) that is not made of leather like the original one? Thank you very much. Cheers, Nighto |

nope, not at this time. you can look in the COVERS and LIGHTS threads up top and see what alternatives folks have come up with. I also HIGHLY recommend that you email Amazon about this as it almost certainly is not a concern they have thought about as yet. I am certain that there are many vegetarians as well as some with religious constraints that feel the same way

What's the problem? Isn't the leather good enough?
<3 that argument, vegetarians/vegans that don't like to use animal products... Let's be serious here.. the animals get butchered for the meat, and the hydes get used for other products, and the bones for others, etc.. In the US all drugs require animal testing, and vaccinations are required for schoolchildren. So unless you want to not get vaccinated, and not take medicine, you can drop the whole "using animals for testing or products is wrong" bit. Overpopulation breeds disease. Medicine reduces disease. Being alive is good. We can't have it all. So we can either kill lots of people, or kill lots of animals. Honestly either solution is fine with me. BTW I haven't eaten any animals for over 15 years >> |

Before we get into a huge argument on who's philosophy of going vegetarian is better...
To my knowledge, there's no lighted cover (like Amazon's) where it draws power from the Kindle using those hooks. BUT there are alternatives. I know that M-Edge makes pretty good covers (From various reviews). They have various jackets that are not made of leather. They also come with a little sliver where you can put the M-Edge light in there... So if you get the jacket + the light, you have a lighted cover. The advantage to having a separate light is that you have a separate battery and you can detach it whenever you want. Hope this helps ![]() |

I struggled with this a while myself. All of the non leather covers were far inferior. I still use some leather, so I finally went with the lighted cover with some trepidation. Haven't seen a better solution since, even though I've continued looking.

Thanks for all the opinions.
After the inicial excitement after buying the Kindle (and this even knowing that I'll only receive it in march!), I realized that $59.98 just for a case with lights is a lot of money. Is not like I'm gonna read in the darkness all the times. I think I'll just get a cheapo jacket on DealExtreme or eBay and that's it. Until I've checked this out: http://dadjunk.com/2009/12/1-kindle-...mouflage-case/ That's how I ever pictured myself using my Kindle! ![]() Once again, thanks for all the opinions. Cheers, Nighto |

Before I got a cover with a built-in light, I used to use a very cheap and efficient clip-on light that also comes in useful when reading pbooks.

Well, after one hour of searching for my fellow Kindler I think I got something for you.
![]() ![]() You may check this one too, it's "washable", it's from China and it's simply too cheap so I believe it is not leather so I believe it is not leather. Maybe I'm onto something, maybe not, at least now I'm familiar with covers market ![]() |

![]() EDIT: I found there are about a dozen threads on the subject. Too many to put links to them all here. I put "kindle homemade cover" in the search to bring them all up. Now, off to check them out myself. Last edited by wvcherrybomb; 01-19-2011 at 08:52 PM. Reason: added info |

Unfortunately, the power through hinges system is patented by Amazon. As such nobody but Amazon can make a lighted cover that draws power from the Kindle. To put it bluntly, this sucks. I honestly prefer a separate light though because certain reading lights take up as few as 1 AAA battery and last for about 20 hours per charge. Just make sure that it works with your case. P.S. I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't buy leather products either. |

^^ Wow! I wasn't aware of that!! Thank you very much for the information!
I already bought the Kindle, but since it's only going to be posted in two weeks, I still have time to cancel it. Time to read reviews! ![]() If it's 3G works here in Brazil, I'm sold. Once again, thank you! Is there someone with both devices who wants to share opinion about their differences? Cheers, Nighto |

"Your NOOK 3G + Wi-Fi can connect to B&N Fast & Free Wireless networks in the United States. These networks are AT&T cellular data networks that are widely available. Your NOOK cannot connect to other cellular data networks in the United States. It cannot connect to any international cellular data networks, including those in Canada and Mexico." ![]() Yeah, it will have to be the Kindle. But thanks anyways! Cheers, Nighto |
