PB302 questions...

Folks,

Just got my 302. This is my first reader. Had it setup and started reading and
it was great. Mine arrived with English->Russian dictionary, thanks to this site
I was able to do the needful to turn it to English->English.

However I've a few questions based on the problems I've faced so far, In case anyone knows how to get around these please do let me know:

I'm on the 15.2 firmware.
Here are a few things I've noticed:

1. Very often, SD card is not detected. (The only solution seems to be to eject the card and reinsert it.).
2. PDF When zoomed, I'm unable to PAN left/right. PAN up/down seems to work fine. I'm trying to do it in the touchscreen.
3. When viewing a pdf file that has say two coloumns of text, is there a mode where where we can view things coloumn by coloumn?
4. I also find that doing a search in PDF, seems to take a long time (say even in the loaded usermanual) and the time it seems to take is proportional to the length of the pdf (given that the usermanual is just 80 pages, with larger PDFs its almost impossible to use it.) Sometimes when in reflow mode, the search, after a long "hour-glass" time it just exits the book itself.
5. when searching, it seems to alter the zoom prevailing. Once the search is done, it comes back to the zoom level in which it was prior to searching. Anyway to avoid this?

6. Does anyone have instructions on how to use bluetooth to transfer files? (I'm not intrested in connecting to the internet via another device but rather just in transfering files from my laptop to 302.)
7. Anyway to customize how many entries are shown in the "last opened books" list? (By default how many does it display?)
8. I tried wifi with WPA-PSK and that seems to work. But I was trying WPA-Enterprise and have had no success in connecting to hidden wifi network that uses WPA/WPA2 Enterprise and MSCHAP authentication... has anybody had any success with that?

Thanks!

I guess it depends on the reader you're using for the document. I just tried a PDF docuemnt with the default reader, AFAIK it's Adobe. After I zoomed in to 300% I could pan with my finger in all directions.

Sorry I can't help you with that, I had similiar experiences and came to the conclusion to avoid PDF where possible, if not don't expect much of the reader.

You may try the alternative reader pdfviewer. In your book shelf tick and hold your book/document until the context menu pops up, select 'Open with' select 'pdfviewer'. That may solve some of your problems and may introduce new ones. ;-)

I download my daily newspaper through the phone, as the 302 still does not support book downloads. On the PB302 I press the power button once and select the bluetooth symbol in the right of the top icon bar. After a fow seconds you get a message that bluetooth has been switched on. Beware it havily drains your battery, so switch it off after the transfer. In my phone's file browser I select 'send via bluetooth', select pb302 from the selection list and the transfer starts. However I got the impression that sometimes the phone fails to connect to the PB when I try to send another file some time later. In this case I need to restart the pb302.
I got the impression this is based on obex filetransfer and should work with almost any Bluetooth device.

Sorry only a few answers to your questions, hope they're helpful anyway.

For #1...

I've had a problem where my memory card isn't read, and 'believe' it to be due to temperature and low levels on the battery. If my battery level is below 3 bars and the device is cold, I think the device is unable to adequately power the card reader. Everything else works, and once I've held/fiddled with the device long enough to warm it up, things work again (or I remember to keep it cahrged above 3 bars).

This is based only on my own experience...avoiding the above situations has left me without card-reader problems...so far. I'm hoping that's all it is.

Good luck!

about the sd - i tried a strange solution, seems to work ?

Hi, I was very frustrated with the sd at first, but I tried something non-logical, but it seems to be working.

I put a lot of books on an sd, in seperate directories. One of these books, I copied to the readers internal memory, and now they seem to share the directory. The one book I copied is registered to the reader and the rest to the sd. They show up in the same directory under 'books'

Nowadays I always seem to start with the sd detected and all the books visible, where previously it would go undetected half of the time... Perhaps you should try if it works on your 302 as well. I have no clue why this works on my machine.

Interesting....I'm hesitant to do anything since things have been good for a couple months now. I'll keep it in mind, though, in case the problem re-emerges. I did, though, to be safe, copy books I was reading onto the internal memory.

Thanks for your replies. I love the device even with all its flaws, just wanted to see what others are doing to avoid all these pesky issues.

No in my case it is FBReader. Since posting yesterday I found out, when we are zoomed large, the pan right/left does work. It only doesn't work when the zoom level is such that only a word or so is missed from the right an left.
IOW, I think its something like, when the document is about 25% larger
than the screen.

Thanks anyway. I'll have to find a workaround for this, since most technical books are only in PDF and do require search. I'll try alternative readers.

Ah! So it has nothing to do with connections under the "Settings" option. I was trying to set it up there. I tried what you said but dont' know where the file is going:
* I switched on bluetooth in the reader (using the powerbutton).
* Did get the message that bluetooth was on, and bluetooth symbol displayed.
* I used "bluetooth-sendto" on my linux laptop, to send a txt file and the PB302 showed up in the device list.
* I selected PB302 and chose send.
* The 302, popped up a dialogue box asking for PIN.
* I entered the same pin in the laptop and 302.
* The laptop sent the file.
* The PB then displayed something (too quick for me to read).

Going to books section in the PB now, I was not able to see the txt file. Any idea where bluetooth "sends" go by default?

Regarding the SD card problem, when it happens, the workaround for me seems to be to eject the card and replug it in.

Never mind. Bluetooth transfers appears to show up in the book section (not under any particular folder). The reason why I didn't see the file first time was because the file I transfered had someother extention instead of txt.

One more question though:
Does any one know how to delete a connection in the settings->connectivity->bluetooth section? I have an incorrectly setup connection, but can't figure out a way to delete it.
