Kindle DXG vs Kindle 3
Hi Folks,
I've searched through the web and the forum here and I couldn't found the answer for a simple question: What is the difference between Kindle DX gray and Kindle 3 (AKA latest generation)? At the moment that I bought my DXG (Nov 2010) I thought there is no difference because DXG was advertised as latest as well. Afterwards looking closely I saw that: 1. DXG is using firmware 2.5.x and Kindle 3 is using firmware 3.x 2. Kindle 3 has better browser than DXG( at least displays pictures) My main concern is - is Kindle 3 contrast better than DXG? Do they use same e-ink technology? Is Kindle 3 pageturning faster than DXG? Last couple of days I am reading a book which is in Cyrillic txt format and is 9500 lines (or whatevere Kindle displays as page numbers) Going to previous page sometimes takes like 4-5 seconds, going forward though is not a problem. If someone knows a review which answers to this questions please post the link. Thank you, Svetli |

The K3 and the DX both use the latest "Pearl" eInk technology. Other than the screen, the DX appears to be based on the older Kindle 2 hardware design. Like the K2 it has no WiFi, and it shares the same firmware version as the K2.

some other points: K3 and DXG noth have the faster processors (over the K2s) K3 has twice the RAM of DXG K3 is much faster than DXG at page turning and menu naviagtion DXG is superior for reading PDFs due to the larger screen but strangely lacks some minor PDF features the K3 has. |

Thank you - this is exactly what I wanted to know. I don't know what is the exact difference in the PDF handling, but indeed DXG does not show properly some of the PDFs that I have (there are missing pictures and formatting) ![]() |

I think I have had a couple pdfs actually cause the DXG to crash and reboot. There may be certain features in some pdfs or maybe errors in the creation of some pdfs that cause this.

The DX does not have the new PDF tools, so you cannot search, highlight, or annotate a PDF.
If you are using the DXG as a reader and don't care about PDFs it is great. That is how I use mine. I prefer the larger screen of the DX to the smaller screen of the K3. |

simple solution for that is to download Duokan. the pdf reader on it is far superior to even the K3s. it has support for indexing, text darkening and custom cropping. |

Others would say that as things stand now it really just comes down to personal preference and the screen size.

dunno what your beef with duokan is sky, but you constantly lurk on these pdf threads complaining about the support yet seem unwilling to sort the problem at least in the meantime. do you even read pdfs on your device? Last edited by max99; 01-19-2011 at 04:36 AM. |

Will cost you money to send files to your Kindle DX(whispernet) where as you can do it for free on a K3(using wifi)

That would only be the case should you have a need to transfer your files wirelessly. Personally I load all my files via the USB connection from my PC. This is (obviously) free on all devices.
