0.7.40? 0.7.70? Kindle 3 support?

Hi everyone, today I was installing some programs on my new Debian testing x64 box and when I installed Calibre, the wizard didn't have the option to select Kindle 3 as a device (only 1 and 2). A bit of poking around revealed that the version that Debian provides is 0.7.70, while the webpage shows 0.7.40 as the latest version for all platforms (even compiling from source).

I remember having installed Calibre on Ubuntu 10.04 before through 'aptitude install calibre' and it did give me the option, though I can't recall what version it was.

So, in short, what should I do to make my Kindle 3 work with Calibre if it doesn't give me the option to select it as a device?

Thanks in advance for the help.

uninstall the debian provided version. Follow the binary install instructions on the calibre website.

Alright, I'll try that, thanks!

Any reasons as to why Debian packages a "newer" version with less features?

I have no idea, I gave up on keeping track of all the variegated insanities of calibre linux packages a long time ago. The typical linux distro just isn't designed to handle a package that evolves as rapidly and has as many dependencies as calibre.

They're providing 0.7.7 not 0.7.70. That's 7 not 70. They're providing a much older version.

Just installed the binary version and it works like it did in Ubuntu. Looks like Debian's screwed up on this one, then. I'll see if I can get in touch with the package maintainers (http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/calibre), maybe they can clean up their versioning mess.

Anyway, thanks for the blazing fast answer!

Oh, it's a simpler problem than I thought then - it's just outdated

Thanks for the clarification, I messed up on that one
