Multiple logins for content server

First off, Calibre is an awesome tool. Thank you! I donated soon after I started using it.

I would like to manage what books the members of my household are able to see in the library. I run the content server on one machine in the house. Right now you can configure the content server with a login/password and associated search filter.

It strikes me that if I could create more than one login/password/search for a single running content server, I could control what books the different people in the house see. I could create a kids login and password and associate a search filter for YA books with it. I can then also have a grownup login and password with an unfiltered list of books for the adults.

Not knowing how the code is structured it sounds like it might not be too hard of a change to enable filtered sharing of books in a household.

Has something like this ever been considered as a future enhancement?

Thanks!

It's harder than it sounds. And you can achieve this today by running multiple content servers on different ports, using the command line

In addition to Kovid's option of multiple server instances, you can use chaley's PHP server:

or you can use a reverse proxy on different ports. They provide various levels of per user restriction.

I'll give 'em a try...

It sounds like the command-line option is what I was looking for. I'll have to read up on it and the other approach.

Thanks for the pointers!

I've had excellent results with multiple instances of calibre-server.exe running, even though I'm running Windows7 with the program and libraries scattered across a network.

I use a batch file that explicitly changes to the calibre binaries folder, with command lines that explicitly specify the port, library, and saved search (restriction).

I try not to indulge in library management using the main calibre gui while the server(s) are running, but when I have, it's worked better than I expected, generally recognizing newly added books and minor retagging.

Practicing tag management, column management and/or saved search management can cause glitches, but so far shutting down the servers and main gui, then restarting the servers has always recovered nicely.

I had some issues with custom columns, but as of 7.48 all is well again.
