With offers or without on Voyage?

Do you think its worth paying an extra $20 US for not having offers on the Voyage?

It would be worth it, if the device wasn't already so ridiculously expensive.

Only you can answer that question for you. For me, it's worth it on my PW and will be on a Voyage if I ever buy one. I have a sleep cover on my PW and like that I can just open the cover and start reading. I know it's not a big deal to swipe before reading--but I'd still gladly pay the $20.

You can buy a Kindle with special offers and then if you realize you'd rather not see the ads, you can pay Amazon the $20 later to remove them.

I'm so new to Kindle eReaders I don't know what that is! I didn't know/realize that it would be desirable to jailbreak Kindle eReaders, nor did I know that 'independent developers' created hacks for Kindle eReaders.

What does the screensaver's hack do?

What does the screensaver's hack do?

It makes it so that you can put your own sleep screen pictures on the device, or (I think) use the cover of the current book being read as the sleep screen picture.

Of course, if you use a cover that automatically wakes up your reader when you open it, that hack is useless, since you never see the sleep screen picture anyway.

I loved doing that for the Kindles I had in the past. I think I did it on the Keyboard, and I know I did it on the Touch and the Paperwhite. Fun times!

it allows full control over the screensavers... although only if you have a non-ad-subsidized Kindle.

There are all kinds of useful hacks. Another popular one is the one that lets you manage collections in tandem with calibre.

Of course, the latest firmwares for KT2/KPW2/KV have "fixed" our jailbreak entry point.

For me it is worth it, but as others have said, it is a personal choice. If you are unsure, just buy the special offers version, and if the adds annoys you then you can always pay the $20 later to remove them. The final cost is the same either way.

However, note that you CAN'T (yet?) jailbreak the Voyage anyway, so don't go by that. I say get the version with ads and see if they bother you. You can pay the $20 later to have them removed. They don't bother me.

I wanted to make sure it was completely clear -- didn't want him to buy it and expect to be able to jailbreak the thing. Due to reading too quickly, etc.

I just bought an ad-free Voyage to replace an ad-free Kindle Keyboard I bought in May 2011 - I figure the extra cost isn't a big deal when you consider it spread over the lifespan of the device, 5 bucks a year to not have ads (which I find annoying) on a device I use for enjoyment on an almost daily basis is worth it to me.

I always get my Kindles without ads. If I didn't I'd never feel that it was truly mine, and, of course, I'd be right. The subsidized Kindles with ads is really renting part of the device back to Amazon. I do appreciate that they avoid making the ads obnoxious and that they're optional but I just don't want them.

I haven't owned a TV for well over a decade for the same reason. I don't like ads. I do like some TV shows so I have Amazon Prime, Netflix and a Warner Brothers video subscription that gives me most of what I want. I finagle the rest as best I can, always without ads.

It's not really that I'm against ads in principle. I'm against the way they're forced on us. I remember in the early days of the internet, mostly before the WWW came along, people in forums discussing how the net might someday become commercialized and be full of ads. I laughed a those silly people then. I guess now they're laughing at silly me.

I got caught up in my previous post griping about ads and I forgot the real reason I made the post, so here it is.

I've never really felt any need to jailbreak a Kindle but I can think of features that would tempt me to do so and one would be the ability to completely do away with screensavers.

Those of you old enough will remember that screensavers were invented, literally, to save our screens. CRT screens that remained the same too much of the time got the image burned into them. That was an uncommon but occasional problem before the days of GUI's but it became a serious problem when GUI's came along. So programs were created to keep the screen from burning in by changing it to something else when it wasn't being actively used. Later the OS's began to include that important feature.

Since the demise of CRT screens screensavers have been mostly ornamental. They're a nice but not very important feature.

On an e-ink screen I'm not sure they're so nice and, if anything, they're detrimental. Not a lot, but at least a little bit, since the only time screens draw power is when they're changed. Screensavers add a few seemingly unneeded changes. Actually I don't know that they're unneeded since there might be some concern with e-ink burn-in, but I've never heard that there is so my guess is it's purely ornamental.

What I think would be ideal would be to simply leave the text on the screen, as it was when the device went to sleep. Perhaps the word "Sleeping" could appear unobtrusively in the bottom margin. Then when I'm ready to read I can just pick up the device and begin reading as it turns on. The word "Sleeping" could go away to let me know it was on.

As clever as the design of ereaders is I think some "features" aren't at all well thought out and this is one of them.
