Is it possible to remove Adobe Digital Editions DRM? I can't seem to find an answer to this question even after a bit of googling...

I believe what igorsk is saying is that it's possible in theory, but nobody has done it yet. In this thread, we discuss the only current method of converting DRM-protected PDF files to other formats: using software to make screenshots of the entire file and OCRing them.

It certainly would be nice if there was a simple solution like there is for other formats, but at the moment the long, complicated, error-prone process mentioned above is all we've got. Not really worth the trouble.

Yes, I knew it is possible to do this, but would be a herculean effort for a book of any length.

Hopefully, the programmers out there will solve this problem soon.

OK, first - all these thoughts are conjectural. I have not actually tried to do this, and don't own or have a license to the tools needed to make this work, but....

There are software test tools that run on top of the application under test, which provide a repeatable test of the application's UI. The one I worked with a number of years ago was named Winrunner, don't know if they're still around. The idea is you build a model of the application within Winrunner, and then construct a script to do a set of tasks. After the step, you check the actual results against your model to find bugs or differences, then move on to the next step.

Using such an test on top of Adobe Reader ( or Digital Editions, or whatever actually displays the DRM'd pdf,) you could instruct Reader to display each page in turn, have Winrunner take a screenshot of the window, and save it to a file. Then you're at the step of running an OCR. If you are a good scripter, it *should* be easy to modify the script to load a number of books in sequence, by pointing at an external data file with ebook filenames to load and locations/filenames to save.

But I'm not going to do this work because I refuse to buy the blankety-blank pdf in the first place. And it would be a lot of work unless you were going to use it on a lot of pdf books.

There's a program called CopiStar that basically does exactly what Darqref describes. It can even automatically stitch together screenshots of portions of the page when you can only see part of the page at a time. It costs $29.95. But of course, it produces images, not text, so it still has to be OCRed and converted and whatnot.

Hopefully, a simpler solution will show up at some point in the near future.

I tried CopiStar and it took the screenshots and created a pdf document. I then used Adobe Pro 8 to OCR the document, then exported it to various document types including Word, RTF, and TXT. However, I cannot get an editable document to convert to an ebook.

This is for PDFs with passwords, for which there are multiple sites providing "password recovery". It does not apply to Secure Adobe ebooks.

Nope they don't claim to have a solution - they state that they only work on Password protected document (and only if you know the user/open password if it exists). ACS3/4 uses a entirely different key handling mechanism.

the program autoit is supposedly very easy to script in, and it would be able to create the screen shots automatically very quickly

people actually use it to create bots in video games, click, printscreen, click, printscreen, should be the work of a few minutes to write for someone who knows the language

Has anyone tried (and had success) with either ABBYY Finereader or ABBYY Transformer to convert Adobe DE (DRMed) ebooks?

I briefly tried out their Screenshot Reader http://screenshotreader.abbyy.com/ which seems to work quite well, but one has to turn each page manually, click the right button, paste the text in a new document et cetera, so it's quite a cumbersome task, and certainly not usable to convert complete books. Maybe some kind of script could be used to perform these tasks automatically, though.

I know that Copistar automates the screenshot process. One is then left to OCR the images with some other program.
