Free Cradle Offer

Did anyone else get an e-mail today offering a free cradle with the purchase of a Sony Reader??? It comes straight from Sony Electronics. Granted, you can now find Readers online elsewhere cheaper, but it's still a nice little perk, and it shows Sony is still interested in marketing the product. Happy News!!!

The cradle actually is not needed. You can get access to all the plugs you need at the bottom of the Reader. What Sony should have done in the first place is bundle the cradle with the reader. It's about $50 US to buy one separately. Not worth the cost. If Sony is still selling the Reader for $350, then you'd be best buying it from someplace selling it for $299 and forgoing the cradle.

The cradle can be nice to have, depending on your circumstances & habits.

I tend to put my Reader on to charge as I'm falling asleep at night, so I keep the cradle on the nightstand. I'd never be able to find the cord and connect it without waking back up enough that I'd need to read more, but I can get it into the cradle while 3/4 asleep, so I find it useful.

You can't go wrong with the free 2-day express shipping, the $50 price drop, and the free cradle. Plus the $50 connect credit. The "classics" you can find probably on Project Gutenberg and do a better job formatting them yourself. unless someone's uploaded them to the book section.

I agree that the cradle is not needed, but I really like it. You need to consider it important enough to give up some desk real estate, though.

Easy to dock the Reader (even with a cover on it), and I love the white glow that lights up while charging.

I thought the "current wisdom" on LiIon batteries was that it wasn't a good idea to continually "top them up", as would be the case if you sat the Reader in a cradle connected to the wall charger every night?

I notice that Apple now advise you to let the iPod battery run down before recharging, rather than keep it "topped up".

There seems to be a fairly lively debate still going on that topic, HarryT.

Hmmm. So it looks like it might be case sensitive on the code.
