For the price of a decent LCD monitor you could get a dedicated reading device (is probably what the people are thinking).
Do you read manga or some other rich illustrated books? Or what I actually mean is, why are you willing to spend $ 200+ on a monitor with the purpose to read books on your pc instead of buying a nice, light, eye-conserving dedicated reader?

To answer the original question - eyestrain is very subjective, so you have to go somewhere and compare the screens for yourself. We have various discussions from the "eInk vs LCD" sort, and even they get pretty tangled up. A "LCD vs LCD" discussion will probably be a disaster.

No matter how good a monitor is, I couldn't read behind my PC. At least, not books. My posture would be completely wrong for extended reading. So, it wouldn't be my eyes that would kill me, but rather my back, shoulders, neck and even buttocks!

I totally agree.

I see now. But the answer stays the same - go to a store and ask for a monitor, easy on the eye for all day working. It should be the same as all day reading.
Also use some tricks, like soothing background of the text, bigger font, serif or no serif, whatever suits you.
And, there are glasses for working on PC, they ar supposed to help against eyestrain.
Finally, there exists an LCD which is readable even without backlight, but it's still not mass market and probably will never grow bigger than 15".

P.S.: Most people here have one or other sort of reading device, be it Smartphone, LCD reader, or eInk reader. But none of these are suited to compare to a monitor. So you are looking in a tiny fraction of the people here, who:
  • read on PC
  • have compared different LCD monitors

I think this specific question might be better answered in some kind of tech-forum, where LCD monitors are the subject of discussion and comparison.

Because of their resolution, IPS monitors will be better than TN. This issue has been discussed ad nauseum at POTN. Go there and search for the "best monitor" threads...

Get one with a 0.248 mm Dot Pitch. The smaller the dots (ahem, pixels), the better.

Get an LED monitor and forget about IPS. Those are mostly for professionals where their works depends very much on colour accuracy. Most of the media you can find on the internet will be useless anyway on an IPS monitor. Not to mention the price difference.

Most importantly take regular breaks (there's even a program that pops up every 20 minutes or so... forgot what it was called, something with "rave", and a sheep as an icon... Sorry, I forgot...).

For reading at night there's F.lux - http://stereopsis.com/flux/

Hope it helps.

Forget IPS, really ? I think IPS is very clear and beautiful. Take a break is important, I agree! Thanks for your advice!
