Something Under The Screen

I just got a (mostly) new PRS-900 from ebay. Everything is in excellent condition except that there is something UNDER the screen. Does anyone have any experience taking one apart or does anyone have (or know where to find) the PRS-900 service manual (not the user manual but the service manual)?

Hi, papaholmz. Maybe dust got trapped under the screen? Sometimes wired or engadget have articles with photos showing teardowns of ereaders. Also maybe someone has made a youtube video? I guess I would try a google search with those sites in mind. I have seen several posts where people have disassembled other models, but I don't recall seeing any on the 900. Hopefully someone else will come along with better suggestions.

I just found this website. They don't have the 900 listed, but it says they will do a search if you contact them. They have other Sony ereader models listed.

With the touch screen technology Sony used on the 700, 600 and 900 Readers, dust under the touch screen layer is the likely culprit.

I had a 600 that had a large speck of dust in the upper middle of the screen. Fortunately I was able to live with it.

Thanks guys, I was able to take it apart and remove what was under the screen. I put it back together and so far it works fine. It looked like part of a bug, but anyway, it's gone now.

Thanks for the responses.

Glad you got it fixed! I am curious though. Did you just decide to go for it and take it apart on your own? Or, did you find a good source somewhere that helped you dissect it?

I winged it. I've worked with electronics for a long time so I wasn't too worried.

for future reference I found a series of photos showing a prs-700 being disassembled on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/2172951...7611324679087/

it's always tough when there's any kind of transparent layer over a screen... debris inevitably somehow finds its way under there and you have to getting more dust under there when you open it.
