Dedicated Cybook forum Opened at MobileRead!

Hello, MobileReaders!

We're* very proud to announce that MobileRead has added a dedicated forum for the Bookeen Cybook, you can find it on the forums page, or follow this link if you prefer.

We've* pre-moved the dedicated Cybook threads into it, so it's all ready for you lot to run amuck in, so have at it.

If you run across other threads that ought to be in this new forum, please let us know, so that we can move them too.

*All the actual work on this has been done by Alexander Turcic (I just get the fun part of announcing it), so karma that guy if you want to karma somebody.

We don't have any official word on that, but we've encountered some rumors that it's fairly imminent, so it seemed like an appropriate time to start the new forum.

As with all such rumors, salt to taste.

We (Bookeen) are very happy of this independent initiative. This forum will allow us to interact more closely with the ebook community and provide directly to "Mobilereaders" all the useful information concerning the Cybook.

I understand your impatience concerning format support and price, it should arrive very soon.

As described in a previous mail, our interface goes quite fast and we expect to publish soon a video to show the Cybook in action.

How will this unit compare with the Sony Reader? I am looking to make a recommendation for our company soon, and am looking at the Sony device... this unit seems to be about the same size, with the same screen technology w/o a backlight... what are the differences? Also, I will need to make a decision soon... any idea when this will be formally announced? Thanks!

Welcome to MobileRead, AClotfelter.

Honest answer - nobody knows.

As you say, hardware-wise, the Sony and the CyBook will be pretty similar. The CyBook will use a "next generation" screen which is slightly brighter, with a noticeably quicket refresh rate, but whether that will make any practical difference remains to be seen. On the other side of the coin, the Sony has 50% more internal memory (96MB compared with the 64MB of the CyBook).

It really boils down to what the machines will do software-wise, and that's a complete unknown as far as the CyBook goes - we'll all just have to wait and see.

What is it that your company wants to use them for?

One point I could add is that the company making the Cybook makes it clear that it wants to cater to groups, especially corporate. They will customize the Cybook's software to the client's specifications. Send a PM to Michael, he'll tell you more.

We'd have to investigate if Sony can be willing to give the same service.

Remember, though, HarryT, Sony only promised us 64MB, the other 32MB is 'their' OS/Application space that they're just not using yet.

What I don't know is if Cybook's 64MB is all there is, or if they're doing a similar arrangement.

Yes, it was a pleasant surprise to buy a machine advertised as having "64MB RAM" and find that it actually had 94MB (or whatever it is) free. It's not too often that companies give you more than they advertise!
