Pictures of Pocketbook IQ
Here are some pictures. The firmware version reads "Eclair". Not sure whether this is latest firmware but this firmware has problems with stability and responsiveness of the device. Still far from being ready.
The first picture is just a picture of the device (in blue). The second picture is a a picture of the reader and the sleeve that came with it. The third photo is the firmware message screen I obtain each time the device is powered on and remains for about 25 - 30 seconds. The fourth picture is the screen that comes up after it starts up. I still have to set the correct date and time. The fifth picture is home screen of the e-reader from which you access the menus. The sixth photo is menu that comes up when you select applications in the home screen. |

Just wanted to add more comments regarding some questions I was asked previously about PDFs. Opening certain PDFs is slow but after the PDF is open, the device is responsive and turning pages is acceptable. I just loaded a 50 MB PDF and it took almost 3 minutes to open but after it opened, I was able to move through pages fairly quickly. One issue I have seen with PDFs, however, is that the text is not centered on the screen of the e-reader for some pages. One page may be displayed centered but the following page may not and some of the text to the right side of the e-reader is not readable because it runs over the edge of the device. Hopefully, this is a problem that will be fixed. I will be trying other formats shortly.

Thanks for your posts. Yes, this does not look like a solid e-reader. At least, not yet. We'll see how things work with the firmware upgrades.
BTW, perhaps you could find out what the battery life is on this thing using it just for reading. And how long it takes to recharge the battery. Thanks again. |

And, hopefully with the final firmware will default to English books in Bookland, rather than the Russian ones we see in the pictures. Thanks for the pics! What do you think of the slip case for the IQ? Good quality? Does it fit properly? |

I agree. Let's give PB a chance to correct the problems. I have been using the device for 2 hours now and it is not that bad. Yes, there are problems but I have seen much worse. Hopefully, the firmware upgrade will resolve all these problems. For example, just two minutes ago, I tried to open the library and the device hung for 5 minutes. I had to go back and try it again twice before it worked.
The slip case is perfect. The device fits right in. When I opened the box and saw the case it was a very pleasant surprise that it came included. This case could easily sell for $20 US or more based on prices I have seen of cases for other similar devices. |

Sure, I am all for that. I have used PB e-readers in the past, and I am interested in getting another one from the new series. I just don't know if it's going to be IQ. Perhaps, but I need to know more about it. I am more familiar with typical e-ink readers.

fingers crossed on the firmware. |

Zetareticuli, big thanks for the valuable input on your IQ experience. I'm also interested to know how the experience is like using the IQ as a web tablet. I hope you can post some feedback once the MAC address problem is resolved.
Btw, on my Netgear router, if I turn off all security (including filtering) and connect my device, I can see the device's MAC address appear when I go to the MAC filtering options. I add it to the filters from there, then re-enable filtering. Hope this helps somehow. Thanks again. |

Tob, I have not had a chance to use it as a web tablet yet. I am going to keep trying today. I have not been able to connect it to my wireless network. I emailed Pocketbook support to ask them about locating the MAC address of the device and received a reply within a few hours. The MAC address is displayed in the second row in the Advanced settings of network (WiFi Settings). I am going to try when I get home.
Last night I disabled the MAC address filtering in my router and made it really simple for the IQ to connect to it. It connected to the router but the connection kept dropping every time I tried to use the browser. I tried for about 45 minutes without success. I am not sure if the problem is with the router or the IQ. I have a brand new router that I purchased recently. I am going to replace my old router with the new one tonight and try again until I get it to work. Even if I have to build a separate wireless network for testing, I will. I want to establish whether the problem is with the IQ or the router. However, the IQ is the only device that is having trouble connecting to the router. All other devices including my Entourage eDGe connect with no problem. I have a few things to try. More details on this later. Back to the e-reading experience. I have tried 20 PDFs and the experience loading most PDFs is slow. There is also the issue of many PDFs not being centered on the screen. One page may be displayed correctly and the next may not show all the text. There is also the problem of accessing the library of books. I found that it constantly freezes when there is an SD card inserted. Seems to work much better without an SD card in it. I am hopeful that all these issues will be fixed in the firmware upgrade. |

How do you feel about screen clarity? Is it better or worse than other LCD devices you have used? I tried the Pandigital Novel and I felt like text was really fuzzy...I'm trying to figure out if this screen is basically the same or somewhat improved. Especially in terms of glare and text clarity.

If you have a bit of time, could you check out a couple of these games and dictionaries?
They're supposed to work. http://pocketbook-usa.com/support/pocketbook-iq/ |

The clarity of the screen is a bit fuzzy, yes. It is not bad for a $140 US but definitely no ipad. The ipad is in a class of its own in that aspect.
I finally got the WiFi connection to work and did some internet browsing using the built-in browser. Very good. The speed at which the pages load is actually very good. Pages are easily readable when you turn the IQ to "landscape" orientation. I compared the speed at which the ipad loads pages to the IQ and the difference is not very big. The ipad is slightly faster but definitely not anything overwhelming. For $140, I would say the tablet capabilities of the IQ reader are an excellent value. I still have to try the games and dictionaries. I will try them tonight and post feedback. |
