Harry,

DRM is outside the scope of the ePub spec. Any ePub producer is free to add their own DRM to an ePub file, and I don't believe this is going to change for ePub 3. There are currently at least three different (and mutually incompatible) ePub DRM mechanisms.

Adobe, iBooks, and I'm sure there's another, but I can't think what it is off the top of my head.

But "mutually incompatible" does not mean that there couldn't be a reader that supports more than one of them. Doesn't the Kobo support Adobe and B&N?

Yes, I think it does. There's nothing other than iBooks, though, which support iBooks DRM.

Kobo Touch does support B&N DRM, from the reports I have seen. Sony is pretty much the only recent device that does not.

I think you're right! Here's a shot of the store just now...

Kobo also sell DRM-free books too. But their DRMed stuff is Adobe.
