Hello - it was Calibre that got me here
Hi All,

As you may guess, my name is Ron and I am living (retired) in Bali. I have been reading e-books regularly for a year now using my lightweight laptop with 8 hours of battery life.

As my e-library started growing I was looking to get it organised, then found Calibre - which is great, and it is the support Forum that brought me to MR - but now I can see that there is plenty more here.

I like picking up free e-books where I can, and PDF is the most common format I get, but often they are more easily read if re-flowed to a narrower format. Bur problems crop up - particularly where the PDF has ligatures for ff ll fi etc. They can get messed up on conversion to EPUB.

So I will be lurking on the forum looking for useful hints.

We love Calibre as well. You can only imagine how many hours Kovid Goyal and crew have spent giving us more and more functionality in Calibre. Good product and good guys.

Good to have your company, Ron. The problem with PDF is that it's, basically, a for-print digital format and doesn't always convert well to other formats -- especially evident if you try to convert a PDF that carries eccentric layout, fonts, graphics, etc.

Your laptop should handle PDF fine, as do netbooks, tablets and a few ebook-dedicated readers. If you do land yourself a reader, though, you will generally find -- where regular text is concerned -- that ePub or (in the case of Kindle) Mobi formats provide a more satisfying reading experience.

Thanks everyone for the welcomes. I have spent my first day browsing the forums (or are they fora?), and looking through the available e-books - an impressive collection. I have downloaded a couple - they seem to be good quality. So I see many happy hours ahead.
