Nook color shutdown
![]() I just got my nook color yesterday and I'm not sure if this is normal or not. When I turn off the screen it will unlock normally if I do it immediately, but if I wait more than about 5 minutes I have to hold the power button for about 30 seconds and it starts up as if it was completely off. It also forgets what book I've been reading and what page when this happens. Any advice? Thanks |

Barnes and Noble encourages you to leave the device on all the time (unless your charge is below 10%), even when charging.
You can set the screen to timeout (go to sleep) at 2 mins, 5 mins, 10, 15, and 1 hour. When the device is asleep, you just need to hit the big old physical "n" button on the front, and it will wakeup so you can then unlock it. I believe a quick press of the power button will also bring it out of sleep. If the unit is on, but sleeping, and you hold the power button down for very long, the unit is likely rebooting. Maybe someone else can chime in with the issue regarding the state of the last read book ... |

If you're holding the power button down that long, you're rebooting it. Hold it down just long enough to see the screen flash then release. You have to pay attention or you'll miss it.

I've had an issue similar to this. I have found that if I use the N button to bring it out from sleep mode (rather than the power button) that I don't experience the issue nearly as much.

I tested the theory by using the n button to unlock to no avail. The screen still stays black. I'm going to see if there's a factory reset and see if that does any good. I'll update when I have news.

What you are describing does not sound normal for a non-rooted NOOKcolor.
If you want to let it go to sleep then do as @KryptoNyte suggests and set the screen to go into sleep mode after x minutes. Then a short press on the n button will wake it up and you can swipe the bar that appears to completely wake up the NC. If you want to completely turn it off, press and hold the Power button for about 5 seconds and the screen will get blurry and a dialog box is displayed to ask if you really want to shut the NC off. If so then press OK. To turn the NC back on, press and hold the Power button for 5 seconds or so (should never take 30 seconds) until you see a line of text displayed across the top half of the screen. When the text is displayed release the Power button and wait until the NC restarts, which will take a while. Eventually the slider bar is displayed and you can slide it to wake up the NC. If you are having to press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds each time to restart, then something isn't right. |

I did the factory reset and that did no good. Then I downloaded the 1.0.1 update and installed that. That also has not fixed the problem. Next stop is tech support.

Assuming you purchased from a store, just exchange it.

Just before heading out to exchange the NookColor I decided to restart it and test it one more time and now the problem seems to be gone. I'll try to turn it on and off as often as possible in the next few days because I hate problems that seem to disappear for no reason. Wish me luck.

hi goose61282, i've been lurking and waiting for someone with this similar problem. Mine was worse. Pressing the powerbutton, even just a slight touch, will shut it down, it won't even care if i chose NO when it asked me. Although, for some time i stayed away from the power button and just let it sleep by its own. And one day, the power button just didn't respond at all. I returned it and now i'm waiting for a replacement.

That's not normal from what I've seen and if it continues, exchange it. I've seen minor problems with one unit that would not hold on to adjustments made to font, and restarting it helped. It was hopefully just a little glitch and it will be ok.

So it worked perfectly for a week and today has started to do the same thing. I've done some testing on it and if I allow it to sleep for more than two minutes it shuts down. Hopefully BN will let me exchange this without too much hassle.

Goose, if you can't bring the NC out of sleep with the big "n" button, then I'd certainly head to the store to exchange it.
