Goodreads/Library Thing
I have been looking into these two web sites and I see that both of these are social networking sites. Are these two web sites competitors doing the same thing or do these two web site do different sorts of things? Are they complimentory or competitors?

The interface for Library Thing is not that good. Goodreads is a lot better and Goodreads is free. Library Thing is NOT free.

It's funny. I like LibraryThing's interface much more. I've found it to be customizable to allow me to display the data that I want to see in the way that I want to see it. I also like being able to customize the information, too. It is free (but only for a small collection).

I find them complimentary. I started with LibraryThing and later opened a Goodreads account. Both have things I like and disllike.
And LibraryThing's lifetime membership is only $25. Hardly worth complaining about. |

I'm not complaining about the fee. But why pay for something that's not as good as something free? No reason at all. I don't like Library Thing and I do like Goodreads. I have accounts with both.

So, Goodreads lets you give them marketing data for free, while Library Thing wants you to pay them for you to have the priviledge of giving them marketing data. Awesome.

Does goodreads do the barcode thing? I really liked that about librarything, but haven't been willing to pay for membership so it ended up a bit useless.
I created a goodreads account a while ago, too, but hardly used it in the end. I didn't really understand what I should be doing. |

I never said either was perfect. But Goodreads is better and the volunteer staff they have is a lot more responsive to fixing listings. Plus, it's free and has a better interface.

Goodreads only allows authors to give away paper books in their promotions. Authors who would like to give away digital editions (whether they be self-published, with digital-first or digital-only presses) will often do that on Library Thing.

I've always felt that LibraryThing is more about cataloguing your books (it's more... librarian-like) and Goodreads is more about the social side of reading (with reading status updates and all that).
Yes, LibraryThing is not free, but you also don't get ads. And I also think that the GR interface is not very good. LibraryThing has less reviews... but you also get to avoid all of the crazy/annoying gif reviews that plague certain books on GR (3 examples: 50 shades / Clockwork Princess / Walking Disaster). Anyway, it depends on your personal preferences. Last edited by andreabc; 07-27-2012 at 10:20 PM. |
