Buffalo Lights: Revised Edition now live at Amazon Kindle!

This is the official announcement, and Happy New Year, too!

The long and short of it is this: Back in December, 2002 I created the first Buffalo Lights book, a photo-illustrated PDF that I sold by myself from my blog. A collection of 40-some Web columns, newspaper columns from Horse Fly (now sadly defunct), and tales written specifically for the book, Buffalo Lights tells the story of the first few years of our monumental life shift in moving to New Mexico in ’99. In 2005, I signed up with a print-on-demand publisher and gave the world a quality paperback version subtitled “Maryland to New Mexico”—there aren’t any photos in that one, but if you like physical books, that’s the only choice at $13.95 + shipping. However, you really ought to take a look at the new Kindle revised edition ($4.99). It’s a major leap forward.

The biggest change has to be the 42 color photographs! You won’t see them in color on your Kindle, but you will on Kindle for Mac or PC, and that includes iPads and iPhones. (That’s right: you don’t have to own a Kindle device to read this book.) Also, two chapters you’ll never miss are gone, and I’ve made numerous edits.

The weird thing is that every word is true, including the following. From Prologue: The Myth, I give you the key:
We were driving home after dark from Taos to San Cristobal the way we usually did, past the Indian lands to the east. As we neared the place where Kathy liked to spot the pueblo’s dark brown buffalo herd at the foot of the mountain, she stared into the deepening gloom and mused, “They sure would be easier to see if they’d put lights on them.”

Buffalo lights! How utterly improbable yet somehow plausible in the context of this place. Whether she knew it or not, she had created a nugget of myth that would tie us to the great beasts forever, for neither of us would ever pass that way again without remembering.
And yes, ideally you should read this first, then Taos Soul. I seem to have done things backwards again.
