No Collection Support for SD card stored content

Well, the 1.0.1 notes say the upgrade only addresses WiFi and browser issues, so I finally called B&N tech support to ask about the "my shelves vanishing" problem that happens to sd card stored content when the NC is powered on and off and their response was that only books stored on the NC's internal memory can be used with the collections/my shelves feature. When I asked if that didn't defeat the purpose of having 32gig expandability they answered "maybe it will be looked at if it becomes an issue for more customers in the future."

So disappointing.

I agree, it is disappointing. Is there a specific reason why you don't wish to use the available 5GB internal memory for your books for the time being?

Well, yes and no

When I first got the NC, I was spending a lot of time converting my sony collection (almost all .lrf files set up all spiffy margin/font-wise from Book Designer) into epubs for the NC via calibre...setting the cover art etc. And when I got to a few hundred (I have around 1500+ on the 650) I started noticing a bit of a slowdown on the NC. So as an experiment I thought I'd free up all the internal memory by resetting the NC and just storing all the books on the sd card since I wasn't that far along in the whole conversion process yet.
It went well, and did seem a bit faster so I was happy as a clam (I REALLY love the color cover art) as I re-made all my shelves and placed the books where I wanted them. When I turned the unit off and restarted it and found all the shelves empty, it was very disappointing. A few people on the B&N forums have experienced it and another person on here so I am guessing it's a software issue rather than a defective unit.

Since they now are saying that the collections/my shelves feature is only intended to be used for internally stored books, I am not sure what to do. Stick with the sony and having my entire collection on-hand, or go with a smaller collection and the NC (I mean I REALLY love the color cover art )

It's not just disappointing, it's dumb way to "win friends & influence customers". I kind of says, "We don't care about our customers & what they might think".

I hear ya, and am seriously hoping that I was speaking to a rep that didn't really know what they were talking about, but the one thing that has me worried is that she pretty much categorically stated "there's no pending action on this issue." Ugh.

I find that hard to believe that they aren't looking into this. It would be strange for a company to market a device as "primarly an e-reader," with expanded Micro-SD card memory options that can't be used for your electronic media. I'm not primarly a Nook Color reader, but that situation is certainly a bummer.

Maybe they intended the SD card to store MP3 & pictures only??

Slayda, I think that B&N might want to say just that, but let's be practical for just a moment. Consider what it might be like to manipulate 32 Gigabytes of photos and mp3's using the limited apps that B&N "allows" on their device.

I dropped 15 directories of photos on my SD card (about 50 photos per directory), and quickly realized that the "Gallery" included with the NC just isn't going to cut it. There's nothing like browsing 750 photos with no available directory structure or filtering.

KryptoNyte, I concur. I didn't mean I like it but was trying (desperately) to find some reason why they would not use the SD card more effectively.

Actually I tend to keep my library on my computer and only my unread books on my reader. Unfortunately I've found that I buy more books & therefore have more unread books when they're ebooks.

Sorry, Slayda, came back a little strong there.

I'm a technology freak, and it seems as though when something doesn't work like it should, rather than fix it the company tends to fabricate arguments to support some reason for the issue, instead of just saying, "sorry, that's not working yet." I get that same feeling on this NC issue.

In this day and age, I figure we have about 2 months of active support for <any given device> before the company moves onto the next greatest thing (like a Nook Color with 4G for example).

That would drive me nuts. How horrible to make shelves and then have all that work gone the next time it was started!

I guess NC owners should start sending in some emails regarding this. Maybe if they hear enough on the subject they can add it in an update like they did with the original Nook and shelves.

B&N has a long history with their original Nook of ignoring content other than their own and, additionally, disregarding the limits their software imposes on external storage (16GB card allowed with software that will only allow 5% to be used). The fact that "shelves" can only be set up withing their system rather than as regular directorys and folders is just one more indication that they are rather clueless. This in the number one reason that I have rooted my original Nook and have purchased a JetBook Lite. They have received many. many complaints and the solution is simple and obvious, so they are ignoring it for some reason.

With B&N we will have to just dream about how easy it would be if they simply allowed folders. For serious readers, neither B&N nor Kindle will be a contender.

Sounds like a limitation that perhaps will be over come by an app. Any developers on board?

This discussion concerns the Nook Color, and the Nook Color supports folders. It also supports Shelves/Collections, but they are apparently broken with respect to microSD content.
