No, you can't use Kindle books; they use a different file format and have DRM so you can't convert them to anything the 650 can read without doing something dodgy.
However you can get ebooks from Borders, Kobo and the Sony bookstore. Between my public library and Borders/Kobo/Sony I can usually find any bestsellers I want, and I just get cheap indie books from Amazon.

Simply put, no.

Kindle uses a proprietary format that only works on Kindles. Sony uses epub which works on the majority of ebooks except Kindle. It is kind of regrettable because otherwise I would have went with a Kindle instead of a Sony.

The simple answer- No. Amazon sells books formatted for their device- a kindle.

The more confusing answer- Only if it is an unprotected e-book.(no drm) An unprotected e-book can easily be managed, saved, or converted to any format for any reader. Most Amazon e-books are locked with drm and only books which state "unlimited" under devices can be converted. Nothing I have looked for are ever listed this way.

This is true of other stores as well. Drm'd books must be purchased in the correct format for your reader. Epub will work well on your sony.

In general, you can't use Kindle ebooks or B&N ePubs on your Sony because of the DRM (encryption). All other stores use Adobe DRM on ePubs, and these are all compatible with the Sony.

The Kindle store has the largest selection, and, if you are willing to strip the DRM, you can buy from Amazon. Register for Kindle for PC, buy and download the Kindle AZW ebooks, install Calibre and get the 3rd party plugin for Calibre that strips K4PC DRM. Then convert from MOBI to ePub for your Sony. You need the tools_2.4 bundle, and Apprentice Alf's Blog is the best place to read about DRM issues.

Note that in the US, it is almost certainly legal to strip DRM from ebooks you bought to read them on devices you own.

Don't forget to join the Philadelphia Free Library (fill in form, them mail a check for $15) for lots of free ebook downloads that work great on the 650.
