Collections Possible without Activation?

Since the new changes to Kindle Unlimited, you have to download the books and then transfer them to the PC. I do not like my Kindle going online (one reason, Amazon is known to remove books without your consent - including KU books that you've "returned"). That being the case, I bought a second Kindle Paperwhite 7th Generation that has a current firmware of 5.13.7 (3763000075). I transferred the books from my old Kindle to the new one by copying the Documents folder over, but apparently you cannot create or use Categories without first registering the Kindle, which of course defeats my whole purpose of keeping this one permanently offline.

tl;rd: is there any way that I can use categories without registering the Kindle or putting it online?

Why can't you register it before you put the books on (so you get the collections functionality), then take it offline completely and just keep using it that way?

I reckon I can do that. I just really didn't want to even register it if I could avoid it.

Don't you already have an account with Amazon? (I assume so, since you talk about using Kindle Unlimited.)

There's also the issue that if you want to read Kindle Unlimited books, you can't do it using download and transfer anymore. You have to either download directly to a Kindle or use a workaround involving installing Kindle for Android on a PC using Bluestacks.

Any of those books downloaded to that device from Amazon that have DRM will be locked to the original device and will fail to open on the new device.

Amazon pays authors of books in Kindle Unlimited based on how many pages are read. If you read them on a device that is always offline then the page reads will not be counted by Amazon and the authors will go unpaid.

Well, that's what I'm going to do. Download them directly to the online kindle and transfer to the pc.

I do have an Amazon account, with which my original kindle is linked. I just do not want this new one linked to any account or ever go online.

I know. They can be stripped of the DRM in calibre.

Any books that I download that I actually enjoy, I purchase. I see to it that authors are paid for writing books I enjoy.

You can only remove the DRM from those books if your Kindle is so old it won't download the KFX format.

Kindle Unlimited is just a library, you don’t get to keep the books on your kindle if you’ve returned them.

Also you can no longer download and transfer Kindle Unlimited books to your PC. They can only be read on a kindle app or device.

to get the proper nickname for your kindle, then check that against the first post in the above thread.

Once your kindle is jailbroken, you can fake register it.
