Kindle 3G .. wi-fi w/o 3G?
Can anyone please tell me if it is possible to control the 3G and wi-fi aspects of the 3G Kindle separately?
The reason I'm curious is because it seems that Amazon will charge to send a document via 3G but not via wi-fi. If that's true, then what I want to know is if there is any way to limit the sending of documents to wi-fi only to avoid any costs. Thanks. |

You can go to your Manage Your Kindle page and set your "Your Personal Document Charge Limit" to $0.00. You won't get charged and you won't be able to pick up your documents unless/until your WiFi is turned on.

If your Kindle is connected to a WiFi access point, Whisper sync (wireless networking) will use WiFi in preference to 3G. You can avoid any charges for downloading over 3G by simply not syncing when there is no WiFi connection. There is a way of controlling documents that are emailed to your Kindle. When sent to [your-name]@Kindle.com the same rules apply as those for general syncing, WiFi unless no connection and then a fall back to 3G. If you use the [your-name]@free.kindle.com address, they will never use the 3G connection and will only download when there is a WiFi connection. To make sure I get my documents/books free, I do two things: 1) make sure I am connected to WiFi (instead of 3G), and 2) email the document to my "free" Kindle address (xxx@free.kindle.com)

I use the content server in Calibre to send books for free to my K3 wi-fi. They go through Amazon servers, but I don't get charged.

Hey i was wondering where on the site it tells what the charge is? I thought that I was only paying for the books not to have them downloaded onto my kindle as well. What is this all about?
actually i just looked and the books say they are delivered "free" through wispernet. so what charge is it you guys are talking about? Last edited by 3bayjunkie; 12-31-2010 at 11:33 PM. |

Also, be sure to go to your "Manage My Kindle" and set your document charge limit to zero to be on the safe side. |

it doesn't cost extra to download books purchased from amazon (whether you are buying a book for $9.99 or $0.00 from amazon doesn't matter), unless you are outside the u.s., in which case i think it's $2 extra per book. meaning, yes the 'free' books are two bucks. but i think that's only if it's done over the 3g whispernet. (just realized htat i have no idea whether the 3g on the k3's is international. i will inform myself now, because now i must know.)
e-mailing documents to amazon for conversion and downloading via whispernet -- for example an article you find on the internet but would prefer to read on your kindle -- is a different thing. that costs 15 cent per mb. i have my max document charge set to 0.00 as well. if you're using something like instapaper, it's a good idea to set some kind of limit, because material sent automatically can add up quick if one isn't paying attention. |

It depends on the country you're in and the country that your account is registered to. If Amazon have a deal with the local carrier then they offer free download over 3G. If they don't then there is a small fee. They have changed their position in the past and taken out the fee once they got a contract with the local carrier in that country.
