Santa got me a Iriver Story - what next
I am totally new to ebooks and require help and tips as well as a lot of understanding from you all. (its the model with Wi-Fi from Costco £82 inc VAT)
I have a few questions, i am sorry if the have already been answered before but i could not find the answers. . 1) Calibre installed and i have downloaded 3 books to a folder on my desktop and they are showing in the main library section. Using the wizzard i cannot see iriver as a selection, what should i select? 2) is it better to put books on to a SD card rather than the internal memory? 3) suggestions for protecting the unit Many thanks Chris |

1) In order to connect the Story to the PC such that the latter recognizes it as a valid storage, you need to do this:
a) turn on the Story (do not connect the Story to the PC at this point) b) when the Story is turned on, connect it to the PC's USB port. c) on the Story's screen, select PC connection using the direction key. Note that you'd have to do this quickly or the Story defaults to battery charging. 2) It's easier to navigate if you use the internal memory for storage of your books (assuming you're using the original Story, and not 'Cover Story'). On top of that, the original Story has a bug such that it doesn't remember the zoom level for ebooks stored on the SD card. 3) I don't use a protective cover for my Story, so I can't offer any suggestions. ![]() Btw, do check if you're having the latest firmware. You can find the latest software at iriver.com. |

Your original thread on this subject now has a post. I know, I put it there! It's not normally considered good etiquette to post the same question in several different threads. If all the threads are yours it's similar to spamming. If they're not, then you've taken over a thread on another topic and/or posted off topic, however you like to look at it. However, we've all done this, so you're forgiven this once. And at least you did it in the Iriver forum, where there's not much traffic and not many members to piss off! And btw, welcome to MR and to the Iriver forum. |

As Greenapple says, keep a hawk-eye on the Iriver until you see two lines, near the bottom, saying something like Connect USB and Charge Battery. As Greenapple says, I think the default is Charge Battery and you have about 13 nanoseconds to press the down key to move it to Connect USB and press Enter (just joking, you have probably about five seconds but this is not the time to hesitate!). After a while, possibly a minute or more, you will see the heart icon at top middle of Calibre, just to the right of the Library icon, turn to a picture of an ereader, and you should see a message on your screen that Calibre has now found your Iriver. At least I see the message on my Mac, you might not see it on Windows or Linux, I don't know. Then you can swap between PC Library (library icon) and Iriver library (ereader icon). When you right click a book in PC Library, you will be given several choices one of which is something like Copy book to Device Main Memory. If you accept this, Calibre will create a folder for the author at the top level on your Iriver, and put the ebook into that folder. If you don't want it at the top level, you can use your equivalent of Windows Explorer to move it somewhere else, but that's probably as good a place as any. Check out some other threads under Iriver for suggestions on how to arrange your books on the Iriver, and a few hitches that can show up with certain file name formats. And BTW, you, too! Welcome to MR and Iriver. |

Then I'm at a loss.
Try this: connect your Iriver to the pc as above, and in Calibre go in and choose preferences, wherever that is on your pc. If yours mirrors mine, at the bottom of the list there is a choice of Advanced, containing Plug-ins, Tweaks and Miscellaneous. Choose Miscellaneous, and the first one on my list is Debug device detection. I don't know what it does or how it works, but press that and let us know what happens. |

My suggestions, in case nobody with a better idea comes along soon: 1. Post relevant bits of this thread including the debug info in the Calibre forum and see what they make of it. 2. As a work-around, open Windows Explorer or double-click This Computer and see if you can find drive K. At least that will let you load stuff onto the Story whilst you wait for the hackers in the Calibre forum to find a real solution. I really don't think it has to do with the fact that there is an Iriver Story plugin but not a Cover Story plugin, but it might... Good luck and sorry I can't help more. |

James_Wilde
I have posted on to the Calibre section (no replies yet) I have been loading info on to the ebook, and i am impressed with the sound quality of music and audio books via the units speaker. i installed a comic and the screen quality is very good but you need watchmakers glasses to read the text, or maybe its an age issue. The 2 books i loaded on appear fine but dont match the screen, as in page 2 starts at the bottom of page 1 on the screen. I am sure once i get my PC and iriver set up correctly and when Calibre can see my iriver then life will be as good. Any other help, tips or advice you have about the iriver i will gladly take. |

You say "The 2 books i loaded..." and I assume you mean ebooks as opposed to the comics. You will find that so-called page numbers in ebooks have almost no meaning to ebook readers. I often find that a page-number changes somewhere on a page, although not usually so that two pages appear on the same page (you say that page 2 begins on the same screenful as page 1). I usually find that page 1 rolls over and, say, a third of the way down the next screen I see 1/2 in the right margin, where page 1 becomes page 2. Ignore this. As far as I understand it, it's the same problem on all ereaders. It has to do with the reflowing of text to fit the ereader screen.
I saw your post in Calibre, and you've got some replies. So the long shot was the one that was causing your problem! |
