Smile Guess what I got for Christmas!
Hi, my name is Lou and I live in WA. My wonderful hubby bought me a Kobo for Christmas and I'm already using it! Main reason for wanting one? I love to read in the bath/spa and have found a shop on ebay that sells waterproof pouches which means no more soggy pages!!!
Hope to learn loads from this site and get to know a few of you

Thanks for the welcome! I have already read 2 books on my Kobo and am loving it! Only downside is that I bought a book from Borders then after I paid, found out that they are having a problem getting it into my library ( anyone else had this?

Here is a short primer on some of the things that you will need to understand in your travels with your new Kobo. The format that the books come in are typically one of two different formats: PDF or epub. epub is the industry standard typically read by all readers while most readers will read PDF. PDF you need to be careful of the source for the ebooks becuase they typically come with document rights management (DRM) which is code inserted into the books that limit what you can do with the books, such as loaning or giving them to friends. PDFs typically include encryption so that only one brand of reader can read the book, this is typical of the Amazon Kindle and the Sony PRS readers. Thus you need to be careful about where you get your books from unless you:

1) Get them from Kobo Books; and
2) Get them in epub format.

Some retailers tell you that they will get you the book in Adobe Digital Editions. if you buy a book from them in Editions you need to be careful that you have a reader that Editions supports, of which the Kobo is supported by Editions. The only major reader that is not supported is the Kindle.

Most people around these parts use software called Calibre to maintain and organize their libraries. My electronic library is not that big as yet. http://calibre-ebook.com/.

My advice is to take advantage of the account capability that Kobo and most electronic book sellers provide to store your ebooks that you have provided that way if anything happends to your PC or something goes wrong you can replace your library if needed.

Some electronic stores to obtain ebooks from are:

1) Borders - borders.com
2) Kobo Books - kobobooks.com
3) ebooks - ebooks.com - make sure that you buy in epub format
4) Diesel Books - diesel-ebooks.com - again make sure you buy in epub format
5) Project Gutenberg - free ebooks - gutenberg.org/catalog - Again be careful of the format, you need epub
6) Electronic Library - elibrary.net
7) Overdrive - Search.overdrive.com - This is a comapny that does electronic book loaning for many county libraries, you will need to do a search for your county and/or counties near you.
