Thumbs up New hardware: Downgrade and root for 1.5 working!

If you have new hardware and either are staying on rooted 1.4.X or became stuck on non-rooted 1.5, just follow this tutorial:

The unconfirmed part is the downgrading path. If it doesn't work, you get to stay on 1.5 instead of going back to 1.4.X

This downgrade should only be used for people stuck on non-rooted official 1.5.

I'll update the tutorial to reflect that.

I never got the downgrade to work. I eventually get the eink "installing update" notice and the "checking for update" notice on the lcd, but the nook reboots back to 1.5.0

Hold power button for 12 sec -- let up 1 sec. Rinse & repeat 6 times. I did this from an initial "off" state and an "on" state. No dice either way.

Would you mind telling us your Nook serial number?

Several people were able to revert to 1.4.X with hard reset, including myself, while you are the 2nd one to revert back to 1.5.

We really need to get our hands on a signed_bravo_update.dat file for firmware 1.4.1.

(Does the image on the recovery partition include the signature? I'm guessing not...)

I was able to get my non-rooted 1.5 downgraded to 1.4.3 using Naerymdan's method. However, I became stuck when it came to rooting my Nook. I thought I had the no router method down, but I could never get it to connect even though it showed up in Connectify Me. I became lost after disabling DHCP with the other method; it wasn't clear how to setup Tftp32D.

I now have a Nook with 1.4.3 that I would like to root. Any pointers on the best method to do this? My Nook was brand new with a 10038 serial number that upgraded to 1.5 if this helps anyone trying to downgrade.

If you are 1.4.3 you are definitely rootable.

The only know method right now is the one with the fake update that modify the wifi start/stop script to make it start the ADB Daemon.

You basically have to make your Nook try to update from Nomad's website, where the fake update is hosted.

To point your Nook to Nomad's place, you have to create your own DNS server, with Nomad's ip address. A way to do that is using Tftp32D or Treewalk DNS.

To make the Nook actually listen to what Tftp32D/Treewalk DNS is telling, you have to tell either you router that your computer is the DNS server of choice, or turn your computer into a router, using a wireless card and Connectify Me on Windows 7.

I personally use my router and a linux server with BIND9, much easier :P

Ok, I don't know why it wouldn't take the adb connection before, but I went back and did it again with success!! Big shout out to Naerymdan for the info! I now have a rooted Nook with 1.5 and a serial number of 10038!

Thank you!!

Karma for you Naerymdan!

That enough? I reservered the last four digits.

However, I'm now happily rooted!

Actually, there is no need to re-send request to B&N server as you and cdump did in your scripts. I'm using plain XML file wrapped to .php script for this: http://217.20.163.111/sync/001/Default.aspx. Scripts are up and running on my site you can just adjust your DNS server to point to 217.20.163.111 instead of *.barnesandnoble.com.
I adjusted the hosts file in my router to point to the pseudo-B&N IP above and rooted w/o a downgrade back to 1.4.x

Eh, seriously? You just rooted with the DNS hack from a 1.5 device?

Kinda weird as that hack takes advantage of the 770 permission of the wifi_stop.sh file whi is changed to 550 in 1.5....

Well anyhow, good for you!

So I followed this guide, along with the original rooting new hardware wiki, to root my wifes new nook.
Got it rooted no problems on 1.4.3. Although every time I would check for new BN updates, it would never find the 1.5 release. (even before I rooted it, it never found it)
Did a manual update to 1.5 and now the rooting is gone. I have some assumptions that the full manual update might be different than the over the air update. And might have overwritten the files that were added. Not to mention I removed the extra code from the wifi_stop.sh before I updated.
