This is an integral part of the workings within this dual-realm of vampires and werewolves.

Phoenix, having escaped from servitude to Cyrus, known among other vampires as The Madman of the Catacombs, searches for a manner to stop his former master from enslaving mankind for food, slavery and sex. Along the way he learns the local Were are out to kill him and barely escapes several attacks from werewolves. He chances to meet the Most Ancient of all the vampires and learns his mentor may not be as dead as he should be, since Phoenix was the one who drained him of all his blood. Finally, Phoenix is captured by Cyrus' soldiers and placed within a tomb from which there is no escape and for him may well be his dark grave forever.
